Der Potsdamer Aufführung der sophokleischen »Antigone« von 1841 kommt die historische Bedeutung einer Wiedergeburt der griechischen Tragödie auf dem deutschen Theater zu. Ludwig Tieck (1773-1853) und Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) beschritten hierbei Wege, die die Theaterentwicklung der Folgezeit in einigen Bereichen grundlegend verändern sollten: Als Textgrundlage diente erstmals eine unbearbeitete Übersetzung in den Versmaßen des Originals. Vertont wurden ausschließlich die Bereiche, die auch im Theater der Antike musikalisch gestaltet waren. Die Rekonstruktion der antiken Spielstätte sprengte die übliche Theaterarchitektur, indem die starre Trennung von Zuschauer- und Bühnenraum durchbrochen wurde. Diese Bühnenfassung prägte in den folgenden Jahren die Aufführungen weiterer antiker Tragödien. Für Potsdam und Berlin komponierte Wilhelm Taubert 1843 eine Schauspielmusik zur »Medea« des Euripides, Mendelssohn selbst 1845 zu Sophokles' »Ödipus in Kolonos«. In München trat Franz Lachner 1852 mit seiner Vertonung des sophokleischen »König Ödipus« hervor. Dabei blieb jedoch der Erfolg der »Antigone«, der vor allem auf Mendelssohns Musik beruhte, unerreicht. Die Aufmerksamkeit, die dieses Ereignis im In- und Ausland auf sich zog, sicherten der griechischen Tragödie bis heute einen festen Platz im Repertoire deutschsprachiger Bühnen.

Leipzig war die Stadt, in der Albert Lortzing (1801–1851) die längste Zeit seines Lebens verbrachte. Von November 1833 bis Mai 1844 sowie noch einmal 1849/50 wirkte er hier als vielseitig einsetzbarer Schauspieler und Sänger am Stadttheater sowie kurzzeitig auch als Theaterkapellmeister. Und am Leipziger Stadttheater legte er als Komponist und Opernlibrettist (auch in Zusammenarbeit mit Robert Blum) die Mehrzahl seiner eigenen abendfüllenden komischen und romantischen Opern vor. Dieses Kapitel der Musikgeschichte zu erhellen, war Anliegen der Tagung, denn in der Musikstadt Leipzig spielt heute die Erinnerung an Lortzing nur eine eher marginale Rolle. Zu Lortzing als Künstler seiner Gegenwart und der Gesellschaft seiner Zeit äußern sich Vertreterinnen und Vertreter von Kulturinstitutionen der Stadt Leipzig – Musikhochschule, Universität, Gewandhaus, Oper, Stadtgeschichtliches Archiv – und weitere internationale Wissenschaftler und Künstler. Thematische Schwerpunkte sind das bürgerliche und politische Umfeld Lortzings, sein künstlerisches Wirken in Leipzig, seine Werke und seine Rezeption. Leipzig was the city where Albert Lortzing (1801-1851) spent the longest period of his life. From November 1833 until May 1844, and again in 1849-50 he was active here as versatile actor and singer at the city theatre, and briefly as a conductor. And it was the city theatre to which, as both composer and librettist (sometimes in collaboration with Robert Blum) he submitted most of his full-length comic and romantic operas. The aim of the conference was to illuminate this chapter of music history since the memory of Lortzing today plays only a somewhat marginal role in the musical city of Leipzig. Representative of Leipzig’s cultural institutions – the Musikhochschule, the University, the Gewandhaus, the Opera and the City Archives – and international academics and artists discuss Lortzing as an artist of his times and of the society of his times. Themes include Lortzing’s civic and political environment, his artistic activity in Leipzig, his works and their reception.
