Das Leben war einfach und die Bevolkerungszahl meist klein, Nahrung gab es im UberfluB. Zwischen den Menschen und der Natur existierte eine enge Verbindung. Sie werden heute oft als die ersten Umweltschiitzer ihrer Lebensraume bezeichnet. Das eskalierende Wachstum der Weltbevolkerung hat unsere globale Umwelt am starksten verandert. Es herrscht heute ein groBer Bedarf an gutem Ackerland. Walder wurden abgeholzt, urn Land nutzbar zu machen und Holz zum Bauen und Heizen zu gewinnen. Handler aus den entwickelten Industrienationen durchstober ten die Welt nach wertvollen Naturprodukten, urn sie in ihre Heimatlander zu verfrachten. So wurden haufig die Resourcen ihrer Lander ausgebeutet, ohne daB Gewinn fur die dort lebenden Volker abfiel. All diese Veranderungen spielten sich in relativ kurzer Zeit abo 1m Laufe von 40 Jahren habe ich die Umwandlung der abgelegenen Khumbu-Region am Siidhang des Mount Everest miterlebt. 1951 war Khumbu ein Ort von groBer Schonheit mit 3000 zahen und widerstandsfahigen Sherpas, die trotz ihres rauhen Lebensraums ein bemerkenswert erfiilltes und soziales Leben fiihrten. Heute ist die Region iiberwiegend zu einem Touristengebiet geworden. Jedes Jahr stromen 12'000 Aus lander dorthin und hinterlassen ihren Abfall. Sie versuchen die Sherpas zu iiberre den, entgegen ·ihren traditionellen Brauchen, groBe Mengen wertvolles Holz fiir luxuriose Lagerfeuer an sie zu verkaufen.
