The Laghukatha written by Ira Valeria Sarma and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-06 with Literary Criticism categories.

The book presented here is the first work of Western literary criticism to examine the Hindi laghukathā - a modern Indian prose genre that has been published since the 1970s in Hindi newspapers and magazines and is characterised by its concise form (500 words on average) and socio-political agenda. The importance of the genre within the Hindi literary scene lies in the fact that the laghukathā is based on indigenous genres which have been modernised, whereas the Hindi short story and the novel are Western genres that have been appropriated and Indianised. A thorough investigation of around 280 primary texts accompanied by an evaluation of the relevant Hindi criticism gives a comprehensive literary analysis of this genre and its historical development. This allows, in conclusion, to delineate an "ideal type" of laghukathā, suggesting a range of compulsory, desirable and optional features. English translations of almost 50 representative Hindi texts complete the picture and thus provide an insight into this genre so far unknown to a Western audience.

Few genres of the last 250 years have proved so crucial to the course of music history, or so vital to public musical experience, as the symphony. This Companion offers an accessible guide to the historical, analytical and interpretative issues surrounding this major genre of Western music, discussing an extensive variety of works from the eighteenth century to the present day. The book complements a detailed review of the symphony's history with focused analytical essays from leading scholars on the symphonic music of both mainstream composers, including Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and lesser-known figures, including Carter, Berio and Maxwell Davies. With chapters on a comprehensive range of topics, from the symphony's origins to the politics of its reception in the twentieth century, this is an invaluable resource for anyone with an interest in the history, analysis and performance of the symphonic repertoire.

Yaksagana Rangabhumi written by Katrin Binder and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with LITERARY CRITICISM categories.

The yaksagana dance-drama of the coastal regions of the south Indian union state of Karnataka is still a thriving theatre tradition. Characterised by its distinct musical style, a lively blend of sung poetry and improvised dialogues, impressive costumes and vigorous dancing, this genre combines many features prevalent in Indian performing arts. The volume by Katrin Binder presents a general overview of the dance-drama and its representation in academic literature, followed by terminological and methodological considerations. These reflect the author's own training as a yaksagana artist, which also informs the descriptive sections focussing on the songs and dances of the pre-performance rituals. Three exemplary performances are analysed in detail, illustrating trends in performance settings, techniques and costuming. A context-oriented section assesses the current yaksagana scene, documenting troupes, repertoire, sponsors and other factors. This section also addresses the dynamics of change shaping this dance-drama between vow-performances, commercial venture and regional cultural icon. An appendix outlines the possible development of yaksagana in the context of other south Indian performing arts by tracing its literary history. Yaksagana's basic rhythmic patterns and the most important songs discussed in the main study are provided in a performance notation. Accompanying visual material is accessible online.

South Asian Festivals On The Move written by Ute Hüsken and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Fasts and feasts categories.

South Asia is one of the richest areas with regard to its festivals. We find an immense variety of performance traditions: theater, plays, recitations and enactments of oral epics, ritual performances, healing or shamanistic rituals, games and sportive competitions, performances of itinerant or sedentary musicians and religious specialists, pilgrimages, and much more. In many cases, these festivals, their agents and participants are "on the move" - they are changing, but they are also literally on the move and since long also took roots beyond South Asia. They developed specific forms, in constant creative exchange with their setting in the new homelands, but also in continuous reference to what is imagined as "original" South Asian tradition. These festival traditions, along with their material cultures, clearly are of major importance for creating and sustaining individual and group identity. This holds especially true in situations of rapid changes, caused for example by situations of crisis, such as war, ecological crisis, economic change, rapid globalization and modernization. With dramatic changes taking place in South Asia and beyond, some festivals will disappear or already have vanished; others undergo radical transformations; some traditions manage to preserve their practices within a new and very different social setting; and new festivals come into being. The miscellany edited by Ute Husken and Axel Michaels traces these radical changes in South Asian festival traditions within the context of voluntary or enforced mobility of the performing agents and their traditions. Especially this aspect of mobility - of ideas, of people and their actions - and its consequences is a central concern of the volume.
