Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Soziologie - Kinder und Jugend, Note: gut, FernUniversität Hagen, 7 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Schelsky verwertete die empirischen Jugendstudien seiner Zeit, die er im Vorwort der "Skeptischen Generation" benennt (S. 6f.). Ihn leitete die Frage nach einem Gesamtbild der deutschen Jugend, soweit sie dem Soziologen zugänglich sei und überhaupt als Einheit vorhanden. Er verfolgt einen dezidiert jugendsoziologischen und keinen pädagogischen Ansatz. Dies scheint mir einer der Gründe für das spätere Kreuzfeuer der Kritik zu sein, in das Schelsky mit dieser Studie geriet. Schelsky kritisiert die Vormachtstellung der Oberschüler als darstellungsleitendes Modell von Jugend in vielen Jugendstudien und stellt in seiner Studie eine "Analyse der berufstätigen Jugend zwischen 14 und 25 Jahren" dagegen, "und zwar nicht nur aus dem Grunde, daß die repräsentativen sozialwissenschaftlichen Erhebungen die Masse des Durchschnitts der Generation stärker zur Geltung bringen, sondern weil (... ihm) der junge Arbeiter und Angestellte, und nicht der Oberschüler und Hochschüler, die strukturleitende und verhaltensprägende Figur dieser Jugendgeneration darzustellen scheint." (Schelsky 1958, S. 8) Gegenstand der Studie sind diejenigen, die zwischen 1945 und 1955 in Deutschland jung gewesen sind, ungefähr also die Geburtsjahrgänge 1920 und 1940. Schelsky folgt damit zunächst einer qualitativ-jahrganghaften Abgrenzung des Jugendalters: Zur Jugend zählen junge Menschen zwischen 15 und ca. 25 Jahren. Dieser jahrganghaften Abgrenzung liegt jedoch eine deutliche soziologische Definition zu Grunde: Jugend, das sind die jungen Menschen die die Schulpflicht erfüllt haben und somit NICHT MEHR KIND sind, die aber auch NOCH NICHT ERWACHSEN sind, im Sinne, dass sie noch nicht die vollgültigen und vollverantwortlichen Träger der Gesellschaft sind (vgl. Schelsky 1958, S. 16).

Based on the study of a large number of young people ranging in age from eleven to seventeen, Relationships in Adolescence, originally published in 1974, proposes a new model of adolescent development, described as the ‘focal’ model, which makes a valuable contribution to the greater understanding of adolescence for all who have contact with this age group. The book contains an examination of three different approaches to adolescence, an outline of the research project, and a discussion of the empirical evidence concerning identity and self-image, heterosexual and parental relationships, and large group situations. Comparisons are made between age levels and between boys and girls with respect to the whole range of relationships, and the evidence illustrates significant and at times dramatic differences between groups. Of particular importance are some of the changes which occur with age, such as the degree of conflict with parents and attitudes to sexuality. Based on Dr Coleman’s findings is his fresh ‘focal’ model of adolescent development. This model stresses the elements of growth and change in adolescence, with special emphasis on the normal anxieties and conflicts that occur at different stages of the developmental period. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.
