Excerpt from Die Zuckerkrankheit und Ihre Behandlung Die freundliche Aufnahme, die der vor 2 1/2 Jahren erschienenen 1. Auflage des Buches zu Teil wurde, berechtigt mich, jetzt mit einer neuen Auflage vor die Oeffentlichkeit zu treten. In der Zwischenzeit sind keinerlei grundlegende neue Gesichtspunkte fur die Krankheitslehre des Diabetes mellitus gewonnen worden. Doch sind zahlreiche wichtige Arbeiten erscheinen, die sich mit der Symptomatologie der Krankheit beschaftigen. Beim Vergleich der beiden Auflagen wird man finden, dass der klinische Teil des Buches, der in der ersten Auflage nur cursorisch behandelt war, erheblich erweitert und vervollstandigt ist. Ich konnte mich dabei zumeist auf eigene Erfahrungen stutzen. Zur statistischen Verwertung fur gewisse Fragen standen mir 353 Beobachtungen zur Verfugung (abgeschlossen am 1. Januar l898). Der grosste Teil der Patienten (mehr als 200) unterstanden langdauernder, mehrwochentlicher bis mehrmonatlicher, klinischer Beobachtung und Behandlung. Die hierbei gewonnenen Erfahrungen machten es notwendig, den therapeutischen Teil des Buches grundlich umzuarbeiten. In den Principien wird man freilich keine wesentlichen Unterschiede gegen fruher finden: in einzelnen sind aber die therapeutischen Regeln vielfach umgestaltet und mehr auf die praktischen Bedurfnisse zugeschnitten. Fur die gewissenhafte Mitbeobachtung und Mitbehandlung der Kranken, in der von uns gemeinsam geleiteten diatetischen Klinik, und fur die freundliche Unterstutzung bei der Bearbeitung der Krankengeschichten bin ich meinem Freunde und Collegen Dr. E.
