Today’s societal problems are numerous and urgent and vary from issues in healthcare to climate change. The potential for solutions unleashed by digital technology can help to address these problems. For example, digital applications can help to manage diseases such as obesity and diabetes by educating and stimulating patients to mindfully engage with their own health. Despite their value potential, the widespread adoption of digital in those sectors from which society could potentially benefit most seems to still be lagging behind. Why is that? In this dissertation, I increase insight into the collaborations that are required for digital innovation to address societal problems, specifically those in healthcare, by answering the research question: how do firms collaborate with actors to realize value from digital innovation? To answer this question. I carried out three in-depth studies on firms who developed digital health innovations but depended on the support of multiple, yet diverse, actors to realize value from it. In Chapter 2, I focus on how firms manage the interdependencies between actors on which they depend for creating and realizing value from a digital solution. To offer a compelling value proposition (the promised benefits of a (set of) products) to customers, firms often depend on firms such as suppliers of product components or firms offering complementary products or services, which they have to persuade to collaborate. In contrast to previous studies, I find that realizing value was constrained despite the fact that the focal firm succeeded in getting support from suppliers and complementors. I show that further downstream, customers themselves have interdependencies that need to be reconfigured before value can be derived from adopting firms’ offerings. In Chapter 3, I focus on how firms deal with the pluralistic demands of multiple actors on which they depend for support and resources.

Digitalization is a long socio-historic process in which all areas of society's activities are reconfigured. In the first volume of Digitalization of Society and Socio-political Issues, there is an examination of the transformations linked to the development of digital platforms and social media which affect cultural and communicational industries. The book also analyzes the formation of Big Data, their algorithmic processing and the societal changes which result from them (social monitoring and control in particular). Through diverse critical reflections, it equally presents different ways that digital participates in relations of power and domination, and contributes to eventual emancipatory practices. Following on, the second volume examines the transformations that are linked to digital practices that affect the production, circulation and consumption of information, as well as new forms that are taken by social mobilizations. It treats several important issues in the digital era that are more likely to become the subject of public debates, among which one can include the renewed relationship between research and digital. Through diverse critical reflections, it equally presents different ways that digital participates in relations of power and domination, and contributes to eventual emancipatory practices.

The impact of digitalization on people and society has become so large that we are talking about a massive digital change of society. Every person, rich or poor, every organization, every country, is profoundly affected by digitalization. Thousands of companies are going through digital transformation processes, to adjust their business model to the digital world in which you can only keep up if you operate internationally, through the Internet. No one can do without a smartphone and access to the Internet anymore. Social media have a major impact on everyone's life, including politics. Just like the industrial society had to be governed differently from the peasant society that preceded it, the digital world increasingly demands other forms of governance. Traditional laws no longer function properly, governments are losing grip on social media and the Internet, tech giants increasingly dominate the digital playing field, economies are rapidly changing from traditional to digital and cybercrime is given free rein. Digitalization also offers excellent opportunities to achieve the necessary global changes and improvements in numerous areas, such as migration, climate, good education and good healthcare for all. After extensive analysis of what is changing as a result of digitalization, this book takes an in-depth look at possible new forms of governance in the digital world. Europe has been taken as the starting point. First of all, because the author is most familiar with the state of the art in Europe, but also because Europe has already been taking a number of important initiatives in the field of digital legislation. Nevertheless, Europe is in many ways still very much behind large countries such as the US and China. This book makes numerous suggestions to strengthen the European digital position in the years to come. This is badly needed for the future prosperity of Europeans and for Europe's position in the world.
