Di era internet, media sosial dan platform digital telah menjadi arena baru aktivitas komunikasi yang makin sexy. Teknologi membawa perubahan bisnis komunikasi. Tiap jaman memiliki inovasi teknologi komunikasi yang melahirkan kebaruan profesi profesi. Tiap inovasi teknologi komunikasi menghadirkan profesi sesuai konteks, dan model bisnis baru yang terjadi. Di era teknologi penyiaran, profesi reporter, kameramen, news anchor, penyiar hingga producer merupakan profesi atau pekerjaan yang banyak diinginkan masyarakat, atau diminati. Di era teknologi digital, muncul inovasi Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, TikTok, Facebook hingga Metaverse. Platform twitter memunculkan profesi buzzer. Di aplikasi Instagram (IG) muncul profesi selebgram. Di Youtube, ada Youtuber. Di TikTok dan metaverse, ada profesi influencer, dan lain sebagainya. Profesi-profesi itu menarik masyarakat luas untuk mempelajari sekaligus cara untuk menjadi. Di luar Lembaga media, bidang komunikasi juga dikenal profesi public relations atau humas. Ada manajer iklan. Ada manajer Komunikasi Pemasaran. Ada ahli kampanye. Ahli propaganda. Juru bicara, content creator, komunikator politik, hingga Digital Communication Marketer maupun profesi-profesi lain yang tumbuh terkait pekerjaan menangani persoalan komunikasi sekarang ini. Profesi bisa berubah karena teknologi. Tapi semua profesi tersebut di atas tetap membutuhkan landasan pemahaman, dan pengetahuan tentang konsep, teori, unsur, konteks dan prinsip-prinsip komunikasi antar manusia. Tanpa pemahaman dan pengetahuan yang memadahi terkait proses dan cara kerja komunikasi, seseorang akan kesulitan berkarir atau berprofesi di bidang komunikasi yang berkembang pesat dewasa ini.
