Going beyond current readings of Concretism and Neoconcretism, this book shows how these movements were bred in the Brazilian circuit, after adapting international constructivism to the cultural conditions of the country. Thus, based on a systematic investigation in the archives of newspapers of that period, this book explores the premises through which Neoconcretism became organized and gained momentum in a series of debates between the avant-gardes of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro—debates that focused on the visual arts and poetry as objects of intense aesthetic experimentation and prospective transformation. They offer a guide through what seems to be a maze of contradictory theories and purposes. Academic readers interested in Latin American and Brazilian art will learn about the contributions of Geraldo de Barros, Franz Weissmann, Ferreira Gullar, Lygia Clark, Luiz Sacilotto, Willys de Castro and Hélio Oiticica to Brazilian constructivism, and will realize that the seven chapters of this book inevitably question the canon of contemporary art. In fact, the contributions of these artists go beyond national borders, since Concretism and Neoconcretism created early versions of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary art, participatory art, process art, visual poetry, performance, installation art, institutional critique, body art and environmental art, in some cases prior to the United States and Europe.

New Geographies Of Abstract Art In Postwar Latin America written by Mariola V. Alvarez and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-27 with Art categories.

This edited volume examines the history of abstract art across Latin America after 1945. This form of art grew in popularity across the Americas in the postwar period, often serving to affirm a sense of being modern and the right of Latin America to assume the leading role Europe had played before World War II. Latin American artists practiced gestural and geometric abstraction, though the history of art has favored the latter. Recent scholarship, for instance, has focused on geometric abstraction from Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela. The book aims to expand the map and consider this phenomenon as it developed in neglected regions such as Central America and the Andes, investigatinghow this style came to stand in for Latin American contemporary art.

Immanent Vitalities written by Kaira M. Cabañas and has been published by University of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-16 with Art categories.

A new reality for the art object has emerged in the world of contemporary art: it is now experienced less as an autonomous, inanimate form and more as an active material agent. In this book, Kaira M. Cabañas describes how such a shift in conceptions of art’s materiality came to occur, exploring key artistic practices in Venezuela, Brazil, and Western Europe from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Immanent Vitalities expands the discourse of new materialisms by charting how artists, ranging from Gego to Laura Lima, distance themselves from dualisms such as mind-matter, culture-nature, human-nonhuman, and even Western–non-Western in order to impact our understanding of what is animate. Tracing migrations of people, objects, and ideas between South America and Europe, Cabañas historicizes changing perceptions about art’s agency while prompting readers to remain attentive to the ethical dimensions of materiality and of social difference and lived experience.
