El termino humedal es una palabra de uso reciente en el mundo de la ciencia y de la conservacion. Los trabajos publicados por ecologos y biogeografos demuestran que estos paisajes naturales poseen mayor diversidad ambiental y genetica de lo que se pensaba. La geomorfologia de los humedales, constituye un desafio por corresponder a parajes de dificil acceso, con cubierta vegetal de importancia y de escasa expresion topografica, aspectos que dificultan su interpretacion y cuyos antecedentes brindan caracteristicas del ambiente acuatico, la preservacion y legislacion. El aporte de las ciencias geologicas, sumados al analisis digital de imagenes de satelite e integracion de informacion en un Sistema de Informacion Geografica, ha permitido enriquecer, el conocimiento y funcionamiento de estas areas practicamente virgenes. La presentacion se estructura en diez capitulos y un Anexo fotografico. Complementariamente, se incluye al inicio de los capitulos, frases, comentarios y pensamientos que de alguna forma, ayudan - cuando no interpretan -, las ideas desarrolladas y que desde la simpleza o grandeza, descubren los aspectos que a continuacion se mencionan."

Floodplains are ecosystems which are driven by periodic inundation and oscillation between terrestrial and aquatic phases. An understanding of such pulsing systems is only possible by studying both phases and linking the results into an integrated overview. This book presents the results of a 15-year study of the structure and function of one of the largest tropical floodplains, the Amazon River floodplain. It covers qualitative aspects, e.g., adaptations of aquatic and terrestrial organisms to the flood pulse as well as quantitative aspects, e.g., studies of biomass, primary production, decomposition, and nutrient cycles. The authors interpret their findings and the most important data from other studies under an integrating scientific concept, the Flood Pulse Concept.
