Awal waktu shalat wajib ditentukan merujuk pada fenomena ketampakan matahari atau hamburan cahayanya. Itu berarti terkait dengan posisi matahari di langit. Ilmu falaklah yang menginterpretasikan posisi matahari terkait dengan fenomena yang diajarkan Rasul. Waktu shubuh ditandai dengan kemunculan fajar shadiq (fajar yang sebenarnya). Dhuhur ketika posisi matahari mulai bergeser condong ke barat. Asar ditandai ketika panjang bayangan sama dengan tinggi bendanya. Beberapa saat setelah matahari terbenam, itulah awal maghrib. Ketika cahaya syafak (cahaya senja) di ufuk barat mulai menghilang, itulah waktu isya. Dengan kriteria yang disusun oleh ilmu falak, dibuatlah jadwal shalat untuk suatu daerah. Umat Islam tidak perlu lagi selalu mengamati posisi matahari atau ketampakan cahayanya, karena Rasul tidak memerintahkan untuk mengamatinya. Cukuplah merujuk pada jadwal shalat yang telah ditentukan. Idealnya, jadwal shalat untuk suatu daerah mestinya tunggal. Namun kenyataannya di masyarakat beredar beragam jadwal shalat. Pertanyaan mendasar yang sering ditanyakan, jadwal shalat manakah yang perlu diikuti? Penulis melakukan penelitian panjang tentang seluk beluk jadwal shalat di Indonesia di dalam buku ini. Sebab terjadinya perbedaan pada jadwal shalat ditelusuri dengan analisis ilmu falak. Mulai dari aspek rumusan kriterianya sampai cara perhitungannya. Dengan memahami asal-usul perbedaannya, kita diajarkan untuk bisa menyikapinya secara objektif ketika menjumpai perbedaan jadwal shalat.
