Das 1983 begründete interdisziplinäre Jahrbuch EXILFORSCHUNG widmet sich der Erforschung der Bedingungen, Erscheinungsformen und kulturellen Reflexionen des Exils. Der Begriff, der historisch die Verbannung einzelner meinte, wird programmatisch für die Untersuchung der für das 20. und 21. Jahrhundert charakteristischen Massenvertreibungen verwendet. Damit wird eine Perspektive auf die Besonderheiten der Zwangsmigration, ihrer Erfahrungsdimensionen und kulturellen Artikulationen eingenommen. Das Kernthema Flucht und Exil infolge der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur wird mit der Erforschung anderer, auch gegenwärtiger Exile verbunden. Indem das historische Exil als transnationales Geschehen in den Blick gerückt wird, das nicht auf eine Verlustgeschichte reduziert werden kann, sondern vielfältige Vernetzungen und Transferprozesse initiiert hat, ergeben sich Bezüge zu aktuellen Flucht- und Exilerfahrungen und deren globalen Dimensionen und Implikationen. Mit den "Dingen des Exils" stehen Gegenstände im Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit, die Flüchtlinge mitnehmen konnten oder zurücklassen mussten, Gegenstände, in denen sich Erinnerungen an die verlorenen Heimaten, an das Herausgerissensein und Unterwegssein, aber auch an das Ankommen und an die Erfahrung differenter Bedeutungszuschreibungen in unterschiedlichen kulturellen Kontexten symbolisch verdichten. Koffer und Pässe sind dafür nur die prominentesten Beispiele. Indem das historische Exil 1933 1945 zunehmend Gegenstand von Musealisierung und Archivierung wird, gewinnen auch die Dinge des Exils als Zeugnisse und Erinnerungsträger eine neue Aufmerksamkeit. Zugleich zeigt das für die Exilsituation charakteristische Fremdwerden der Dinge in besonderer Weise die Bedeutung materieller Kultur für Identitäts- und Alteritätsvorstellungen auf, die hier im Horizont des "material turn" interdisziplinär aus literaturwissenschaftlichen, historischen, kunst- bzw. musikwissenschaftlichen und archivwissenschaftlichen Perspektiven erkundet wird.

Following World War II, German antifascists and nationalists in Buenos Aires believed theater was crucial to their highly politicized efforts at community-building, and each population devoted considerable resources to competing against its rival onstage. Competing Germanies tracks the paths of several stage actors from European theaters to Buenos Aires and explores how two of Argentina's most influential immigrant groups, German nationalists and antifascists (Jewish and non-Jewish), clashed on the city's stages. Covered widely in German- and Spanish-language media, theatrical performances articulated strident Nazi, antifascist, and Zionist platforms. Meanwhile, as their thespian representatives grappled onstage for political leverage among emigrants and Argentines, behind the curtain, conflicts simmered within partisan institutions and among theatergoers. Publicly they projected unity, but offstage nationalist, antifascist, and Zionist populations were rife with infighting on issues of political allegiance, cultural identity and, especially, integration with their Argentine hosts. Competing Germanies reveals interchange and even mimicry between antifascist and nationalist German cultural institutions. Furthermore, performances at both theaters also fit into contemporary invocations of diasporas, including taboos and postponements of return to the native country, connections among multiple communities, and forms of longing, memory, and (dis)identification. Sharply divergent at first glance, their shared condition as cultural institutions of emigrant populations caused the antifascist Free German Stage and the nationalist German Theater to adopt parallel tactics in community-building, intercultural relationships, and dramatic performance. Its cross-cultural, polyglot blend of German, Jewish, and Latin American studies gives Competing Germanies a wide, interdisciplinary academic appeal and offers a novel intervention in Exile studies through the lens of theater, in which both victims of Nazism and its adherents remain in focus.

Since Greek antiquity, the ‘barbarian’ captivates the Western imaginary and operates as the antipode against which self-proclaimed civilized groups define themselves. This study addresses encounters between Jews and Muslims in interwar Berlin. Living on the margins of German society, the two groups sometimes used that position to fuse visions and their personal lives. German politics set the switches for their meeting, while the urban setting of Western Berlin offered a unique contact zone. Although the meeting was largely accidental, Muslim Indian missions served as a crystallization point. Five case studies approach the protagonists and their network from a variety of perspectives. Stories surfaced testifying the multiple aid Muslims gave to Jews during Nazi persecution. Using archival materials that have not been accessed before, the study opens up a novel view on Muslims and Jews in the 20th century. This title is available in its entirety in Open Access.
