L’uomo nel corso della sua vita matura delle certezze, tuttavia, alcune cose rimangono velate di domande e dubbi forse irrisolvibili. La stessa fede religiosa in Dio vacilla di fronte all’esperienza del male che adombra l’esistenza e fa scricchiolare ogni riferimenti al divino. Credenti in un Dio creatore, onnipotente e Buono, scettici, agnostici e atei sono accomunati dal problema del male, fisico e morale, che non è un fenomeno marginale facilmente trascurabile, bensì una realtà innegabile nella vita degli uomini e delle donne d’ogni epoca. Esso prima ancora di essere una questione filosofica è un problema pratico ed esistenziale, non risolvibile per mezzo delle riflessioni teoriche. Tuttavia, pur tenendo conto di questa impossibilità di rimanere esenti dal male e di trovare una soluzione permanente, rimane il compito di dare una risposta al meno ragionevole alla storica domanda Si Deus est, unde malum? Se Dio esiste, perché c’è il male? Se Dio è giusto e Sommo Bene perché lo permette? Perché non interviene con la sua Onnipotenza e Provvidenza? Dov’è Dio? Perché si nasconde? Roberto Marinaccio (Gaeta, 1982) è dottorando in missiologia presso la Pontificia Università Urbaniana. Si occupa di studi religiosi, teologia delle religioni e del rapporto tra il cristianesimo, le culture e le religioni locali. Dal 2011 al 2013 ha vissuto a Taiwan dove ha svolto attività di studio presso l’Università Cattolica Fu Jen di Taipei e ricerche sul campo interessandosi delle religioni cinesi.

I temi della libertà e del male nelle considerazioni di Luigi Pareyson rivelano una profondità non comune e costituiscono, specie per la teologia, una riflessione "provocante" che dà a pensare. Se la fenomenologia del male moltiplica le domande senza risposta, nell'ordine del pensiero, esso rappresenta l'aporia delle aporie. Eppure, di fronte alla lacerante domanda sul male, l'uomo da sempre ha tentato di rispondervi. Ma il male, nella sua multiforme e tentacolare realtà, non solo sembra sfuggire ad ogni risposta, ma nello stesso tempo sembra rivelare "un fondo tenebroso", uno stato di irrazionalità radicale, le cui radici penetrano nel più profondo della natura umana e gettano la loro ombra nei segreti recessi dei rapporti tra uomo e trascendenza. Così la radicalità del male nel suo non-senso si vede rinviata all'origine del senso, cioè a Dio. Questo è il punto più difficile, temerario e tuttavia penetrante, dove Pareyson cerca di mostrare come proprio individuando in Dio la possibilità, da Dio stesso scartata da sempre e per sempre, del male, si possa comprendere l'irrevocabile, eterna, originaria positività che è il Dio cristiano.

A contemporary of Giordano Bruno and Galileo, Tommaso Campanella (1568–1639) was a controversial philosopher, theologian, astrologer, and poet who was persecuted during the Inquisition and spent much of his adult life imprisoned because of his heterodox views. He is best known today for two works: The City of the Sun, a dialogue inspired by Plato’s Republic, in which he prophesies a vision of a unified, peaceful world governed by a theocratic monarchy; and his well-meaning Defense of Galileo, which may have done Galileo more harm than good because of Campanella’s previous conviction for heresy. But Campanella’s philosophical poems are where his most forceful and undiluted ideas reside. His poetry is where his faith in observable and experimental sciences, his astrological and occult wisdom, his ideas about deism, his anti-Aristotelianism, and his calls for religious and secular reform most put him at odds with both civil and church authorities. For this volume, Sherry Roush has selected Campanella’s best and most idiosyncratic poems, which are masterpieces of sixteenth-century Italian lyrics, displaying a questing mind of great, if unorthodox, brilliance, and showing Campanella’s passionate belief in the intrinsic harmony between the sacred and secular.
