Ce recueil d'articles rend hommage au travail du professeur Bernard Combettes qui oeuvre depuis quarante ans au développement de la linguistique française. Tous ces articles relèvent de domaines de recherche auxquels Bernard Combettes s'est intéressé et qu'il a largement contribué à enrichir. Les contributions de ce volume sont réunies en trois parties. La première, intitulée « de la phrase au discours » propose des études de linguistique de corpus et aborde des sujets aussi variés que la ponctuation, la progression thématique à partir de corpus oraux, la macrosyntaxe de la phrase, ou la cataphore par exemple. La deuxième partie, intitulée « diachronie du français », axe son objet d'étude plus volontiers en histoire de la langue. Se côtoient des études sur la grammaticalisation, les prépositions, la place de l'objet, les constructions « topicalisées » ainsi que les locutions verbales. Enfin la troisième partie est consacrée à l'étude stylistique et didactique du français. On y trouve des recherches sur les adverbes en -ment, les « moyens d'expression » ou bien encore les « objets internes ».

Based on a wide comparable web corpus, the book investigates how discourse markers work in discourse, and compares their differences of position, scope and collocations both cross-linguistically and within single languages. Après avoir longtemps privilégié la langue écrite, la linguistique française, à partir des années soixante-dix, s'est tournée vers l'oral et a développé des moyens et des méthodes d'investigation adaptés. Si la langue parlée des périodes révolues nous est à jamais inaccessible, notamment pour ce qui est de sa réalité phonique, les textes consignés à l'écrit gardent néanmoins des traces de la langue parlée : la linguistique diachronique n'a pas manqué de s'y intéresser, en particulier pour étudier les moyens de représentation de l'oralité à l'écrit et identifier des marqueurs spécifiques. Les contributions réunies dans ce volume interrogent cette relation entre la phonie et la graphie, entre oralité et écriture, en français, à diverses époques de son histoire, et recherchent dans les textes écrits (littéraires et documentaires) les traces d'une représentation de l'oral plus ou moins explicite. D'autres articles sont plus spécialement consacrés à l'analyse du fonctionnement des outils de formatage, tels la ponctuation et les différents diacritiques. Toutes ces enquêtes ont été réalisées dans une perspective diachronique et couvrent une longue période : depuis les débuts de sa mise par écrit du français jusqu'au 17e siècle.

The standard view of the form-meaning interfaces, as embraced by the great majority of contemporary grammatical frameworks, consists in the assumption that meaning can be associated with grammatical form in a one-to-one correspondence. Under this view, composition is quite straightforward, involving concatenation of form, paired with functional application in meaning. In this book, we discuss linguistic phenomena across several grammatical sub-modules (morphology, syntax, semantics) that apparently pose a problem to the standard view, mapping out the potential for deviation from the ideal of one-to-one correspondences, and develop formal accounts of the range of phenomena. We argue that a constraint-based perspective is particularly apt to accommodate deviations from one-to-many correspondences, as it allows us to impose constraints on full structures (such as a complete word or the interpretation of a full sentence) instead of deriving such structures step by step. Most of the papers in this volume are formulated in a particular constraint-based grammar framework, Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar. The contributions investigate how the lexical and constructional aspects of this theory can be combined to provide an answer to this question across different linguistic sub-theories.

The studies collected in this volume deal with pragmatic factors involved in the evolution of grammatical or lexical forms or in the emergence of complex syntactic structures in various languages (Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian and Spanish). They are set against the theoretical framework of grammaticalization. The main methodological tools are cross-linguistic contrastive analysis and diachronic perspective. The existing major works on the history of the French language were published more than fifty years ago and are characterized by a largely a-theoretical approach. More than a hundred years after Ferdinand Brunot began to publish his monumental work, the ambition of the Grande Grammaire Historique du Français (GGHF) is to present the evolution of the French language in its totality, building on the contributions achieved by descriptive and theoretical research in recent decades. It also offers several innovative aspects. The GGHF is a grammar organized by themes rather than by periods, and it reflects all major areas currently under debate in linguistics (phonetics / phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, etc.). In addition, it is based on a balanced corpus of several million words that has been designed especially for the GGHF (with a selection of representative texts for each century). The consideration of this corpus and the quantification of facts enable the authors to establish a close relationship between variation and change: we believe that the interaction of these two aspects is the cornerstone for the interpretation of the evolution of French and of language in general. In addition to the description of the evolution of French, the analysis of language change thus also aims to contribute to the study of the evolution of language as such.
