With the development of air transport, airports have gone from being simple huts where passengers could take shelter from bad weather, sometimes known as "air stations", to become modern infrastructures equipped with the latest technology, cultural facilities, commercial premises and restaurants. All in all, airports have become meeting and entertainment places for passengers and those accompanying them, in addition to fulfilling their principal function as an air and land transport interchange centre. However, despite air travel being something of a daily activity for millions of passengers that transit airport terminals each year, many of the activities that go on in them and that allow for the distances between two given points to become ever shorter are still unknown to the majority of air transport users. Since its first edition, the goal pursued by Iván Tejada, one of Aena's great professionals and author of this book, has been to make the general public aware of this network of activities, technology and the work of many professions that enables this high quality and apparently simple service to be offered. The great deal of interest and acceptance sparked by its previous two editions, which have already sold out, has led to a third edition of “Descubrir los aeropuertos" and its translation into English. Publication index: 1. Airports: A World to discover 2. Airports: Planning 3. Airports: Configuration 4. Airports: Operation 5. Airports: Management 6. Airports of the world Appendix 1: Aviation and air transport chronology Appendix 2: Modern commercial aircraft Appendix 3: Passenger and baggage flows Appendix 4: Commercial airlines Appendix 5: Main airports of the world

Discover Airport Operations written by Marcos García and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-12 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The dramatic development which, in just one century, has led to aviation and has meant that what was once a kind of hobby practised by a few intrepid enthusiasts, has over time become one of the most important modes of transport for passengers and goods; at the same time there has been a profound transformation from those early airfields with just a few simple huts in which a handful of privileged passengers were attended to. This transformation has given way to modern facilities, both airside and landside, able to attend to millions of passengers each year and transport thousands of tonnes of goods. Equipped with all kinds of sophisticated technologies to enable aircraft operations to be performed with the highest levels of safety and security, they are at the same time meeting places and places of culture, leisure and shopping for the passengers who pass through their terminal buildings each day. It is not without reason that they are often referred to as “ airport cities”. Descubrir la operación de aeropuertos submerges readers in this interrelation between aircraft and infrastructures, describing the complex system that is the operation of an airport, but always in simple, straightforward language, as readers are already accustomed to seeing in other books in the collection by professor Marcos García Cruzado. Publication index: 1. How Aircraft have evolved and airports have changed their shape 2. The first aircraft operations 3. The users of an airport: Aircraft, passengers and cargo 4. Most travellers only get to know the large airports when travelling on business or going on holiday. In stark contrast to airports such as London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Madrid, Zurich or others of this size that serve as global hubs, there are however hundreds of medium and small airports in Europe that sometimes act as their spokes. These small airports, which are often not even connected to global hubs, are the focus of this book. They play a crucial and vital role for their local communities in terms of daily needs, work, "ethnic travel" (visiting friends and relatives back home), medical assistance and tourism. In many cases, alternative means of transport (e. g. by sea or road) either do not exist or would take much longer, making these airports indispensable. These airports are predominantly located on islands, within exclaves or in very remote areas on the mainland. Among the airports described in this book, it includes the world's northernmost commercial airport, the only airport in the world with a runway on the beach and the two airports with the shortest scheduled flight between them in the world. Most of the flights offered are subsidized through PSO contracts to ensure regular scheduled air services, often at reduced fares, especially for local residents. Actual numbers during COVID-19 pandemic pandemic show that the number of routes and flights was negatively affected only to a minor extent. The fact that passenger numbers did not decline as much as at the larger airports shows just how crucial a role the airports described in this book play for the communities they serve.
