Over the centuries Yorkshire, the largest and most varied country in England, has helped to shape the history of the nation. From the barrier of the Pennines in the west to the bastion of Falmborough in the east, the region has seen war, insurrection, invention, industrial expansion, political and social development and pioneering achievements in literature, art and science. In this unconventional guide to the people and the places that played parts in this extraordinary story, author Len Markham takes the reader across the country and down the years. He retells the stories of many of the well-known sites and uncovers the intriguing, sometimes secret history of places that are rarely remembered and visited. Along the way he describes the careers and achievements of an exceptional cast of characters- monarchs, bishops, generals, industrialists, inventors, artists, renegades, rogues, eccentrics, murderers and otherwise ordinary men and woman who made a mark for good or ill on the heritage of the country. Over 150 evocative sites are described and illustrated in this invaluable handbook to the intense, sometimes bizarre and always revealing history of Yorkshire.

This book contains a relatively in-depth descriptive look at the origins of YORKSHIRE. Undoubtedly, the biggest county in England. As you will see as you read through the pages of this publication, Yorkshire has an amazing and interesting history. From the Romans, to present day. Yorkshire is steeped in history, and as I compiled this book, I was spell-bound by what I found. I hope you enjoy discovering the past and present from the information portrayed within the pages of this literary account of the origins of my home county.

Hiking And Discovering In England written by Linda Loder and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-30 with categories.

My book is about a personal discovery of hiking and travel in the North of England. It recounts the journey of discovery about how to hike and how to travel with hiking as the main focus. It also describes the nature of the discoveries, both personal and cultural as I explore the four main national parks in the north of England. These parks are; The Yorkshire Dales, The Yorkshire Moors, The Lake District and The Peak District. Along with the discovery of hiking is the discovery of the cultural history of the areas described. Since National Parks in England are not only areas of beauty but of cultural significance, there is much to learn. We learn about historical figures associated with the area. We find historic sites with their own resident heroes and are able to walk in their footsteps as we hike. We also are privy to settings that are used for T.V. shows and movies which is often a motivating factor to encourage people to visit the area. This is an "Off the Beaten Track" area of England and not usually included on guided tours. By taking a Boots On approach to travel rather than a Car Oriented Road Trip, we are able to discover much about the history of an area and how to explore it by hiking rather than driving by. It is Slow Travel, and a chance to see the real England, not the tourist England.
