Efforts to understand the perception of complex auditory stimuli produced four different research undertakings. Studies have been done both with computer simulations and human listeners, the most precise psychophysical procedure to estimate a discrimination threshold. A technique to determine the listener's sensitivity to synchrony was perfected in envelope modulation produced at two separate regions, and have measured such sensitivity using a variety of different stimulus parameters. Sensitivity to modulation synchrony is essentially independent of the locus of the two frequency bands. Studies have also been done on temporal factors that influence the ability to discriminate an increment in the level of a single component of a multi-tonal complex. Very slight differences in the temporal onset (>20 msec.) of tone and complex strongly influence the ability to make such discrimination even when the entire stimulus lasts 500 msec. Finally, we continue to study the estimates of spectral weights used in such intensity discrimination tasks, using the COSS analysis. Keywords: Psychoacoustics. (CP).

This thesis deals with an attempt to quantify subjective responses to sounds, especially in the discrimination between similar sounding noise-like stimuli. A model of the discrimination process as one of feature extraction and decision making about the presence of salient features is proposed. Experiments using both marine sounds and laboratory generated signals were conducted using trained University student listeners and Navy personnel. Two experimental methods were applied with one using a modification of classical threshold techniques. The other procedure used a continuous rating scale to elicit information about the confidence of the listener's discrimination decision.

This book contains the papers that were presented at the XIIIth International Symposium on Hearing (ISH), which was held in Dourdan, France, between August 24 and 29, 2003. From its first edition in 1969, the Symposium has had a distinguished tradition of bringing together auditory psychologists and physiologists. Hearing science now also includes computational modeling and brain imaging, and this is reflected in the papers collected. The rich interactions between participants during the meeting were yet another indication of the appositeness of the original idea to confront approaches around shared scientific issues. A total of 62 solicited papers are included, organized into 12 broad thematic areas ranging from cochlear signal processing to plasticity and perceptual learning. The themes follow the sessions and the chronological order of the paper presentations during the symposium. A notable feature of the ISH books is the transcription of the discussions between participants. A draft version of the book is circulated before the meeting, and all participants are invited to make written comments, before or during the presentations. This particularity is perhaps what makes the ISH book series so valuable as a truthful picture of the evolution of issues in hearing science. We tried to uphold this tradition, which was all the easier because of the excellent scientific content of the discussions.

The symposium that has provided the basis for this book, "Plasticity of the Central Auditory System and Processing of Complex Acoustic Signals" was held in Prague on July 7-10, 2003. This is the fourth in a series of seminal meetings summarizing the state of development of auditory system neuroscience that has been organized in that great world city. Books that have resulted from these meetings represent important benchmarks for auditory neuroscience over the past 25 years. A 1980 meeting, "Neuronal Mechanisms of Hearing" hosted the most distinguished hearing researchers focusing on underlying brain processes from this era. It resulted in a highly influential and widely subscribed and cited proceedings co-edited by professor Lindsay Aitkin. The subject of the 1987 meeting was the "Auditory Pathway - Structure and Function". It again resulted in another important update of hearing science research in a widely referenced book - edited by the late Bruce Masterton. While the original plan was to hold a meeting summarizing the state of auditory system neuroscience every 7 years, historical events connected with the disintegration of the Soviet Empire and return of freedom to Czechoslovakia resulted in an unavoidable delay of what was planned to be a 1994 meeting. It wasn't until 1996 that we were able to meet for the third time in Prague, at that time to review "Acoustical Signal Processing in the Central Auditory System".

Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. Auditory signals are a form of display, but are usually characterized by being discrete in time, and some action is assumed on receipt of the information. Whenever a communications situation is concerned with a limited kind of information, an auditory signal can be used to provide a fast indicator of what to do. They are likewise useful as a substitute for visual displays when the visual load on an operator becomes too great. One of the chief advantages of the auditory signal is that the transmission of information can be completely automatic. The radio range is a relatively simple form of auditory signal, and research on the use of the radio range involves simple intensity discrimination of tones. Flybar, on the other hand, is a complex form of auditory signal which provides three simultaneous signals for use by aircraft pilots in flight. These tow systems of auditory signals have been used to illustrate the type of research which is done on these problems. The major research requirement for auditory signals is basic research in the psychology of hearing. Of the many topics which are covered in that area, however, research on simple and complex discrimination, stimulus interactions, auditory localization, psychological scaling, and auditory illusions appears to be the most profitable from the point of view of possible application to the problems of auditory signalling.
