El DISCURSO DE METAFÍSICA, escrito por GOTTFRIED WILHELM LEIBNIZ (1646-1716) hacia 1684, permaneció inédito hasta mediados del siglo xix. Julián Marías -anotador y traductor del volumen- expone, en un largo estudio preliminar, la importancia crucial de la obra, que ofrece «como en un mapa el panorama espiritual de Europa en uno de sus momentos capitales» y constituye «el resumen más denso y sistemático del pensamiento del siglo xvii». Sus páginas plantean los grandes problemas de la época: la actitud ante el pasado filosófico (desde Grecia hasta la escolástica), el método, el origen de las ideas, la comunicación de las sustancias, la interpretación del hombre como razón, la libertad, la Gracia, la persona, la moralidad, el mal, el infinito y Dios, cerrando en el momento de su publicación la etapa de la historia de la filosofía que abriera Descartes con su «Discurso del método» (H 4406) y que predominó en Europa durante casi tres siglos.
