En Discurso sobre la agricultura de La Habana y medios de fomentarla, Francisco de Arango y Parreño analiza de forma global las características de una empresa fabril azucarera. Escribe sobre su flujo de producción, pasando por la fuerza de trabajo, hasta la financiación, la distribución y los mercados. En opinión del ensayista cubano Jorge Mañach: «El Discurso sobre la agricultura en La Habana y medios de fomentarla(1792) es el escrito más considerable de Arango, y en él se trazan las bases de aquella reforma. Esencialmente, constituye la primera formulación, en el terreno económico, del pensamiento relativista cubano, que después ha de desplegarse con otras derivaciones. A despecho de su «asimilismo» en el orden político —es decir, la afirmación teórica de la identidad de derechos administrativos y civiles entre la Metrópoli y su colonia—, lo que en el fondo anima el pensamiento de Arango y Parreño es, en cierto modo, una idea contraria: la de que Cuba es tierra distinta, ámbito de intereses propios y peculiares, entidad no asimilable a la Madre Patria, ni susceptible, por tanto, de ser regida por las normas del absolutismo peninsular. En Arango se hallaba, pues, en germen, la doctrina central cubana de todo un siglo.» El Discurso sobre la agricultura de La Habana es mucho más que un manual de agricultura. En este libro Arango va más allá del estudio minucioso de la producción del azúcar. Lleva su análisis al fomento de su cultivo por razones geopolíticas. No en vano cincuenta años después Cuba gozaba de una poderosa economía gracias a su producción de azúcar. Y, también, cabe decirlo, sustentada en la mano de obra esclava que requería tal producción.

Including essays from a mix of well-known and newly published Cuban authors, the volume examines the lives of Afrocubanas from the late nineteenth century to the present. The volume’s contributors collect and interrogate the voices of black Cuban women and the political, cultural, social, and ideological contributions they have made to the history of their nation. One of the unique qualities of Afrocubanas is that the text is the product of a grassroots community working group in Havana. A number of antiracist organizations emerged to fight racial inequality in light of Cuba’s new economic challenges after the fall of its chief trading partner, the Soviet Union in 1991. But, the Afrocubanas Project (founded in the mid-2000s) is one of the few groups that challenges racism and sexism together. The members of the Afrocubanas Project hail from a variety of professions, ages, and sexual orientations. They share a collective interest in challenging negative stereotypes about black women. This volume merges their activism and scholarship to offer a counter discourse to existing narratives about black women in Cuba while also creating and disseminating new knowledge about Afrocubanas. There is no other published work in English devoted to analyzing the political and intellectual dimensions of black Cuban women’s thought across the island’s history. Sugar was the single most valuable bulk commodity traded internationally before oil became the world's prime resource. Francisco de Frías y Jacott Fragmento de la obra Publicados en el Diario de Barcelona en los meses de junio y en julio 1859 Por un cubano París Imprenta de D'Aubusson y Kugelmann Calle de la Grange-Bateliere, 13 1859 Ha visto la luz pública en el Diario de Barcelona una serie de artículos con diversos encabezamientos, pero encaminados todos a tratar de la situación y del gobierno de la Isla de Cuba. Fueron inspirados, a lo que parece, estos trabajos por la aparición de un folleto en lengua francesa con el título de: La Cuestión de Cuba, que no ha muchos meses se publicó en esta capital. Nosotros que ninguna parte tuvimos en la redacción de ese folleto, que no estamos conformes con algunos de los puntos de vista, ni con ciertas tendencias que en él se manifiestan, no hemos podido ver con indiferencia la manera brutal y la insigne mala fe con que de él se da cuenta en las columnas del diario barcelonés, ni menos aun sufrir en silencio los ataques con que allí se pretende vulnerar la santa causa de un pueblo esclavizado que aspira a romper sus cadenas. Venimos, pues, a rechazar en nombre de éste insultos y agresiones, y si nuestro lenguaje pareciere severo en demasía, téngase presente que la honra y dignidad de un pueblo escarnecido no tienen fueros ningunos que guardar a la personalidad de quien así le ultraja y hiere en lo más vivo de sus sentimientos. El señor E. Reynals y Rabassa que firma esos escritos es un abogado ilustrado y liberal de Barcelona, según se nos ha escrito. También es catedrático de derecho en la Universidad y secretario del Ayuntamiento de esa ciudad. Cómo se sostengan estos títulos y aquellas calificaciones lo vamos a ver en el curso de esta contestación, que naturalmente deberá resentirse de falta de trabazón y de plan lógico, como que ni plan lógico ni trabazón se advierte en los artículos que nos proponemos combatir. Y si fuera esto solo, si no tuviéramos que señalar infinitas contradicciones en esos artículos, suposiciones y falsedades en que abundan, nuestra tarea, si bien ingrata por lo desordenada e incorrecta que tiene por fuerza que ser, fuera a lo menos corta y más concluyente. Pero tiempo es ya de entrar en materia afirmando y probando, para no seguir el ejemplo de quien rehuye las pruebas a la vez que se complace en las afirmaciones. Veamos el primer artículo del señor Reynals que lleva por epígrafe: La Isla de Cuba.
