El presente volumen investiga la modernidad española de principios del siglo xx, un periodo en el que abundan obras literarias fascinantes, pero cuya modernidad estética está muy a menudo eclipsada por los discursos intelectuales de los mismos autores, comprendidos tradicionalmente bajo el término "generación del 98", o a través de una noción demasiado "galocéntrica" de la modernidad misma. Por eso, los artículos reunidos aquí se proponen enfocar los discursos intelectuales del 98, las obras literarias, musicales y los demás géneros artísticos desde una perspectiva que los coloque en el contexto de la modernidad europea, sin por ello perder de vista la problemática particular de una modernidad que se consideraba a sí misma atrasada y marginal. Los presentes análisis de los discursos intelectuales y estéticos demuestran que los autores logran transformar esta problemática de una modernidad transversal en interesantes soluciones estéticas que expresan su pertenencia a la modernidad y, al mismo tiempo, cierto distanciamiento respecto a ella.

Why the Twenties? Recent scholarship has been pointing out more and more clearly that in Spain, too, the Twenties were a period in which both radical and varied change was being striven for. An obsolete mainstream cultural practice was being confronted by an increasing interest in such novelties as sports, jazz-bands, silent movies or even the first stirrings of feminism. It is the decade of reviews promoting various -isms, from ultraism to surrealism, and of Valle-Inclán's grotesque esperpento, which heralded the fall of Primo de Rivera's dictatorship.
