Language, Literacy, and Health: Discourse in Brazil’s National Health System analyzes language, literacy, and health as social practices in Brazil’s national health system, the Unified Health System (SUS), with a particular focus on the Family Health Strategy program. The SUS was established in the 1990s, offering free consultations, health promotion activities, and home visits by a professional team to the Brazilian population. Using research conducted in two different Brazilian regions, the Northeast and the Southeast, Izabel Magalhães and Kênia Lara da Silva discuss language and literacy as discourse—a very important dimension of health practice—and different uses of texts, including multimodal texts. The research, analysis, and the authors’ ethnographic approach bring to light some issues with SUS practices, and the authors suggest improvements. This book contributes to the debate about language and literacy in health practices, in which patients are partly responsible for keeping well.

This volume ethnographically explores the relation between secularities and religious subjectivities.As a consequence of the demise of secularization theory, we live in an interesting intellectual moment where the so-called ‘post-secular’ coexists with the secular, which in turn has become pluralized and historicized. This cohabitation of the secular and post-secular is revealed mainly through political dialectical processes that overshadow the subjective and inter-subjective dimensions of secularity, making it difficult to pinpoint concrete sites, agents, and objects of expression. Drawing on cases from South America, Africa, and Europe, contributors apply key insights from religious studies debates on the genealogies and formations of both religion and secularism. They explore the spaces, persons, and places in which these categories emerge and mutually constitute one another.

A linguagem, com base na noção de discurso, passou da posição periférica para a que nucleariza as relações das Ciências Humanas entre si e com as demais. Conhecer a estrutura e o funcionamento da linguagem, ou mesmo das linguagens, tendo a compreensão da relação constitutiva da linguagem com a sociedade e a história, leva ao domínio dos processos discursivos nos quais se inscrevem e pelos quais os sujeitos são constituídos. Para estes últimos, o entendimento do que seja uma prática efetiva e consequente da linguagem é básico; na realidade, um pressuposto. Por outro lado, a ciência requer um conhecimento da linguagem, bem como das condições sociais contemporâneas (com suas tecnologias), que permita ao sujeito compreender com mais profundidade seu objeto, mas também dizê-lo de modo mais claro. Em outras palavras, ser capaz de situar-se melhor nas conjunturas social e política em que se constituem suas práticas. E é esta a compreensão necessária que a análise de discurso traz, na medida em que se multiplica em formas de conhecimento que relacionam sujeito, sociedade, história, sentido, ideologia. Nesse intuito, os textos que compõem este livro conduzem o leitor a um percurso que o torna não onisciente, mas capaz de compreender com mais facilidade sua relação com a linguagem em sua não transparência e modos de existência na sociedade e na história.
