«Pero… ¿hubo alguna vez una Primera República?», se preguntaría Jardiel Poncela parafraseando su novela. Es obvio que si hubo una segunda, ¡tuvo que haber una primera! El 11 de febrero de 1873, tras la abdicación de Amadeo I de Saboya, en una reunión conjunta del Congreso de los Diputados y del Senado, constituidos en Asamblea Nacional, se acordó la proclamación de la Primera República. Tuvo una efímera duración pues como república parlamentaria duró menos de un año, hasta enero de 1874, aunque se mantuvo otro año más como república autoritaria, con el parlamento disuelto y las garantías constitucionales suspendidas, y el general Serrano al frente del poder ejecutivo. Hasta el pronunciamiento militar del general Martínez Campos que restableció la dinastía borbónica. De ese periodo solo quedan en el imaginario popular datos negativos: la presencia de cuatro presidentes (que realmente ni fueron cuatro ni fueron presidentes de la república) y casi una docena de gobiernos, la rebelión cantonal de Cartagena y la entrada del «caballo de Pavía» en el Congreso, metáfora de todos los golpes de Estado. «Santamarta es un escritor con una sola y apasionada causa: de la historia de España.
