The End Of Privacy written by Reg Whitaker and has been published by ReadHowYouWant.com this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10 with Computers categories.

Now in paperback, a sobering look at the threats to privacy posed by the new information technologies. Called ''one of the best books yet written on the new information age'' by Kirkus Reviews and now available in paperback, The End of Privacy shows how vast amounts of personal information are moving into corporate hands. Once there, this data can be combined and used to develop electronic profiles of individuals and groups that are potentially far more detailed, and far more intrusive, than the files built up in the past by state police and security agencies. Reg Whitaker shows that private e-mail can be read; employers can monitor workers' every move throughout the work day; and the U.S. Treasury can track every detail of personal and business finances. He goes on to demonstrate that we are even more vulnerable as consumers. From the familiar - bar-coding, credit and debit cards, online purchases - to the seemingly sci - -''smart cards'' that encode medical and criminal records, and security scans that read DNA - The End of Privacy reveals how ordinary citizens are losing control of the information about them that is available to anyone who can pay for it.

A World Without Meaning written by Zaki Laïdi and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with History categories.

In this provocative and incisive book, Zaki Laidi argues that as our world becomes ever larger, our ability to find meaning in it diminishes. With the end of communism came the end of the intimate alliance between power and ideology. No power in our globalised world can any longer claim to provide meaning. In despair we look back to old models (religious traditions, nationalism, ethnicity) to give us a sense of identity. But in a globalised world in a permanent state of flux, just how effective are these old certainties?

Surpassing Shanghai written by Marc S. Tucker and has been published by Harvard Education Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-01 with Education categories.

This book answers a simple question: How would one redesign the American education system if the aim was to take advantage of everything that has been learned by countries with the world’s best education systems? With a growing number of countries outperforming the United States on the most respected comparisons of student achievement—and spending less on education per student—this question is critical. Surpassing Shanghai looks in depth at the education systems that are leading the world in student performance to find out what strategies are working and how they might apply to the United States. Developed from the work of the National Center on Education and the Economy, which has been researching the education systems of countries with the highest student performance for more than twenty years, this book provides a series of answers to the question of how the United States can compete with the world’s best.

Digital Memory And The Archive written by Wolfgang Ernst and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-20 with Art categories.

In the popular imagination, archives are remote, largely obsolete institutions: either antiquated, inevitably dusty libraries or sinister repositories of personal secrets maintained by police states. Yet the archive is now a ubiquitous feature of digital life. Rather than being deleted, e-mails and other computer files are archived. Media software and cloud storage allow for the instantaneous cataloging and preservation of data, from music, photographs, and videos to personal information gathered by social media sites. In this digital landscape, the archival-oriented media theories of Wolfgang Ernst are particularly relevant. Digital Memory and the Archive, the first English-language collection of the German media theorist’s work, brings together essays that present Ernst’s controversial materialist approach to media theory and history. His insights are central to the emerging field of media archaeology, which uncovers the role of specific technologies and mechanisms, rather than content, in shaping contemporary culture and society. Ernst’s interrelated ideas on the archive, machine time and microtemporality, and the new regimes of memory offer a new perspective on both current digital culture and the infrastructure of media historical knowledge. For Ernst, different forms of media systems—from library catalogs to sound recordings—have influenced the content and understanding of the archive and other institutions of memory. At the same time, digital archiving has become a contested site that is highly resistant to curation, thus complicating the creation and preservation of cultural memory and history.

The Art Of The Accident written by Andreas Broeckmann and has been published by V2_ publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Architecture categories.

In the last two years a movement known as "trans-Architectures" has gotten under way among architects and media artists. Dedicated to the conceptual use of computers in the design process, the movement's practitioners might study such things as the form of a cloud or the surface of water through computer models -- in order to conceptualize a new kind of space. This book considers the concept of accident as explored in the November 1998 Dutch Electronic Art Festival by members of "trans-Architectures, " and provides project descriptions, illustrations, interviews and essays from the symposium. Contributors include Paul Virilio, John Rajchman, Greg Lynn, Humberto Maturana, Lieven de Cauter, Lars Spuybroek, Marcos Novak, Seiko Mikami, and Knowbotic Research.
