Diseño, cálculo, construcción y mantenimiento de caminos En España, la longitud actual de la red de caminos rurales y vías o pistas agroforestales resulta incluso superior a la de carreteras. Estas infraestructuras lineales, aparte de comunicar pequeños núcleos poblacionales, prestan servicio a todos los aprovechamientos agroforestales y al turismo rural, cuyas actividades podrían verse muy afectadas en caso de no existir dicha red. Entre las atribuciones de los antiguos Ingenieros y actuales Graduados y Másteres en Ingeniería Agronómica y de Montes está la de proyectar caminos, ya sean agrícolas o forestales, así como las de dirigir, controlar o certificar las obras para la construcción y el mantenimiento de los mismos. Pero las actuales necesidades de comunicación, junto con la modernización del sector agroforestal, sobre todo en lo que se refiere a maquinaria e infraestructuras, ha modificado el concepto de “camino rural”, demandando estudios mucho más detallados de su geometría y sus firmes en función de las intensidades de tráfico presentes y futuras. La utilización de máquinas agroforestales cada vez más potentes y pesadas, capaces de arrastrar cargas remolcadas de hasta 24 t, unido al aumento de las dimensiones y velocidades de los vehículos en general, ha dado lugar a unas mayores exigencias constructivas en los viales agroforestales. Unos caminos que, dado el ajustado presupuesto existente para este tipo de obras, precisan y exigen de fórmulas y técnicas duraderas y a la vez económicamente viables, tanto en su diseño, como en su ejecución y mantenimiento. Por todo ello, se ha considerado necesario elaborar un libro donde se aborden todas estas cuestiones. Una publicación dirigida tanto a estudiantes de ingenierías agrícolas y forestales, como a los titulados de las mismas o a cualquier profesional que tenga una relación directa o indirecta con esta materia.
