Each Disease & Drug Consult book focuses on a specific body system and has two sections. Part 1 presents diseases alphabetically, with a description, causes & incidence, signs & symptoms, complications, diagnosis, treatment including drugs used to treat the disease and the reason for using each drug, and special considerations. Part 2, also organized alphabetically, offers complete drug monographs for each drug mentioned in the disease section. In the Psychiatric Disorders volume, for example, the nurse can read a full description of bipolar disorder or eating disorders, then turn to the drug monographs for a full discussion of each of the drugs used to treat those diseases.

Organized into a series of bitesized chapters, each focusing on a typical consult question, this handbook provides a practical and portable reference which should set both strategy and tactics for the next generation of consulting psychiatrists. The Clinical Manual of Psychosomatic Medicine, both educates psychiatrists and mental health professionals practicing in hospital settings about the relationship between physiological processes and psychological and behavioral factors and arms them with the evidence they need to inform hospital administrators about the value of the services they render. Specifically, this new edition: Expands the first edition's content to encompass more than two dozen topics most commonly encountered by residents and staff psychiatrists. Provides concise information on psychiatric conditions -- such as delirium, depression, and dementia -- that can interfere with medical care if not addressed. Offers a revised format of bulleted lists that maximizes accessibility of critical information so that clinicians can readily locate the required material. Emphasizes the core competencies adopted for the subspecialty of psychosomatic medicine (recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties since 2003) to provide a benchmark for skill development across training programs and academic departments. Reflects the way care is most often delivered -- by a multidisciplinary team providing evidence-based, individualized treatment focused on either the clinical condition (e.g., obesity) or the treatment setting (e.g., primary care). This emphasis on integrated care contextualizes the information presented in a useful, real-world manner. Authoritative, practical, and user-friendly, the Clinical Manual of Psychosomatic Medicine is an outstanding resource that equips the clinician with current, concise, relevant data and counsel to guide decision making and optimize care of medical and surgical patients with psychiatric comorbidities.

Men born to distinction do not always develop it in their homeland. Sometimes trans plantation taps routes to hidden sources of concern for the embracing of novel con cepts or the clarification of man's behavior, illuminating this understanding in the lan guage of their adopted tongue. Such a one was Joseph Conrad, the Polish sailor whose new vision graced our literature long after his death in 1924. Such a one also is the author this book, who was born in that same year to carryon his country's vigor and resourcefulness in our time. He is numbered among those distinguished emigres whose contributions to our culture and progress emanated from the trials and tribulations of the political upheavals, persecutions, and wars of Europe. Like many others, he has brought sound traditions and learning from his native land to enhance the new and less developed of what was only recently a frontier land. Watersheds in world events impose themselves willy-nilly on our lives. One such time was 1946, when the author of this book left his native land and set out for the West. He spent six months in London learning English and then moved to Ireland, where he trained in medicine and also absorbed novel ways and a new culture, includ ing the writings of Swift and Joyce. This young medical graduate's potential was soon recognized by his teacher in neurology at Belfast, who with foresight predicted great accomplishment.
