Children and adolescents are affected by a large range of diseases with oral manifestations that may not be seen in adults. Such diseases include viral and bacterial infections, but many other conditions as well, for example, after swallowing caustic liquids. As with the author's immensely successful Color Atlas of Oral Diseases, this new work is lavishly illustrated with high-quality color photographs, providing the reader with an at-a-glance diagnostic guide. Succinct texts in tabular form complement the images to help the reader formulate a differential diagnosis and a treatment plan.

Excerpt from The Diseases of the Mouth in Children (Non-Surgical) It is difficult to find a subject in diseases of children upon which so much confusion exists as upon the above. There are many reasons for this. The historical development of the subject has been slow; indeed, very little clearing has been done up to within the last fifteen or twenty years; then, a term first used by Hippocrates (aphthae) has caused considerable confusion. Finally, these forms of disease have suffered, in common with all diseases of children, on account of inattention, consequently lack of observation, or observation made in the direction of some preconceived view or theory only. Hippocrates and Galen and their followers first used the term aphthae, and, by degrees, every trouble that took place in the mouth was called aphthous. The distinctions and subdivisions made were in some instances simply ludicrous. It was not until the time of Bretonneau that diphtheritic sore mouth was separated from aphthae, and some authors drew their lines of subdivision so finely that they could make a great number of varieties of aphthae (16 Sagar). The result of this was that everything was so completely confused that one writer failed to understand the other. Even if our present textbooks are carefully examined into, notably those on practice, it will be seen how lamentably weak, in nearly all instances, the chapter or chapters on the diseases of the mouth are, the omissions not to be taken into consideration at all. Dental caries has been called a “silent epidemic” and is the most prevalent chronic disease affecting children. Though much has been written on the science and practice of managing this disease, publications are diverse in their loci, preventing easy access to the reader. Early Childhood Oral Health coalesces all the important information related to this topic in a comprehensive reference for students, academics, and practitioners. This second edition expands the scope of the first and puts an additional focus on interprofessional and global efforts that are necessary to manage the growing disease crisis and screening and risk assessment efforts that have expanded with the boom of new technologies. With updated references and incorporating the latest research, chapters address the biology and epidemiology of caries, the clinical management of early childhood caries, risk assessment, and early diagnosis. Other topics include public health approaches to managing caries worldwide, implementation of new caries prevention programs, fluoride regimens, and community programs, and family oral health education. Brand new are four chapters on the medical management of early childhood caries, considerations for children with special needs, interprofessional education and practice, and how the newest policy issues and the Affordable Care Act affect dental care. A must-read for pediatric dentists, cariologists, public health dentists, and students in these fields, Early Childhood Oral Health is also relevant for pediatricians and pediatric nursing specialists worldwide.
