When I was five, my family moved to a farming community in Germany. My mother regularly wrote home to her parents, telling them about our lives and sending them gifts, which they put in their modern curiosity cabinet. This is a very reasonable situation and one which happens all the time. Nevertheless, what if foreigners who moved to Germany were only ever allowed to read my mother's letters as the complete and acceptable truth for the entire German nation and its people. Would one deem this an accurate history? Would it be enough to analyze German culture, religion, and society? Would looking at the gifts be enough to determine their use without talking to a German? One would most likely answer no to such questions. I chose this narrative because it mirrors the trust adventures, academics, and so forth have put in the archival records written about Indigenous Peoples and their ways. Europeans writing about the Peoples they encountered did not speak the local languages, nor did they understand the cultural practices. Therefore, everything they wrote was interpreted through a strictly European lens, which in turn means that their writings were utterly biased and their interpretations often misconstrued. Nonetheless, many scripts have ended up in archival institutions. In kanata, this form of literature has continued without much interruption, and many such writings continue to be archived. This thesis will analyze the history of archiving in kanata using a decolonizing lens. It will analyze four archival institutions who are doing it right and four crucial documents, although not the only crucial documents, relevant to decolonizing, indigenizing, and reconciling the archival field in kanata with Indigenous Peoples. Finally, through the use of a case study, it will demonstrate the modern problems surrounding the archiving of Indigenous knowledge not produced by Indigenous Peoples nor housed with any community engagement. The point of this thesis is to call out archivists responsible for the continuing oppression of Indigenous Peoples and provide them with ways of rethinking the archival protocols and practices they put onto Indigenous knowledge contained within archival records.

In this study, I analyze the archiving practice of Alok Vaid-Menon, a queer trans and gender nonconforming performance artist, through three of their Instagram posts. Their posts highlight three different forms of trauma that they rhetorically perform to display the exigency of the violence that their communities face. In doing so, this study complicates K. J. Rawson's "Archive This! Queering the Archive" (2012), which presents three nontraditional archival practices in order to "re-imagine the parameters of our evidence and the sources of our histories" (239). Rawson relies on Achille Mbembe's notion of viewing "archives as status" to illustrate how queer communities are often left out of archives and/or misrepresented. While his work demonstrates new possibilities for archiving queer histories, there are constraints to it as it exemplifies a (cis)tematic drive, which is primarily seen in the limited attention on violence that trans and gender nonconforming communities encounter. By not fully displaying the violence they struggle with, he leaves a gap in his contribution to queering archives. My aim here is not to argue that Rawson's text is completely unacceptable; rather it is to challenge his archival practices to respectfully represent and prioritize trans people of color. My examination of Vaid-Menon's rhetorical performance of trauma through queer archiving relies on a queer and digital rhetoric methodology. Through these methodological lenses, I begin by assessing one of Vaid-Menon's Instagram posts that illustrates the trauma of daily harassment that they and their communities face, which leads to a normalization of trauma. Second, I analyze their embodiment of contradiction in their second Instagram post that displays the trauma of erasure. I also examine a third Instagram post by Vaid-Menon that portrays a multimodal enthymeme that alludes to trauma of whiteness. I conclude that my discussion of Vaid-Menon's queer archiving prioritizes and accurately presents the said groups solely through "archives of trauma[s]." This form of archiving addresses the larger matter of the lack of privilege that trans and gender nonconforming people of color have as violence against them is documented for the sake of documentation and not to actively disrupt and end violence.

The Good Neighbor Policy was unique: a great power obligated itself not to use force in its dealings with twenty smaller powers and not to interfere in their domestic politics. It was a policy that lasted, with some perturbations, for twenty years: instituted by President Roosevelt in 1933 and carried out effectively from 1933 to 1943 by word and action, maintained during the Second World War largely as a result of British concern for continuance of Argentine beef exports, codified in the Charter of the Organization of American States in 1948, and reasserted by Truman and Acheson in 1950–51, it was covertly repudiated in Guatemala in 1954 by Eisenhower and the Dulles brothers, and not so secretly by Kennedy in the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961. Openly shattered in the Dominican Republic by Johnson in 1965, it has since been completely abandoned in favor of the usual relationships between large and small powers. Working with documents from the Public Records Office in London and the National Archives, with recently released materials from the U.S. Department of State, and with secondary sources, Bryce Wood describes the temptations laid before the leaders of one powerful state by its occasionally recalcitrant neighbors, and the ways of reacting that were found. Having told half the story in his The Making of the Good Neighbor Policy, Wood now concludes it in the present volume. One of the chief casualties is shown to be the Organization of American States, which since 1954 has found itself badly crippled in its work to promote harmony and continued cooperation among the member states.
