As Princess Yahaloma slept, I made my way through the wall of butterflies that surrounded us and out into the night. I noticed the heaviness of the air outside of the butterflies. It was hard to breathe as the air was thick and had an odd smell to it. My feet seemed to slip a little as I walked because of the mist that covered the ground. Feeling very uncomfortable, I picked up a large stick for protection. I moved through the tall grass, noticing the direction we must follow in the morning. Nothing moved out here. There was no moon, no wind, no sound, no nothing. It was very dark, only light came from the stars above. I stood still, watched, and listened. Suddenly, I saw a dim flicker of light about fifty feet from where I stood. Turning and looking closer I saw another dim flicker of light. I moved carefully, taking a few steps at a time forward, and my eyes began to sharpen with a clear night vision. Looking around, I saw there were ugly brown butterflies, some as tall as I. They danced as if they had legs like a man. Raising their antennas and rubbing them together made a terrible sound in the night. In the middle of the ugly large butterflies stood a very tall man. Wait, it was the man I saw walking with Princess Yahaloma! It was him! Why was he dressed so oddly? His black clothes had large sharp pointed spears all over them—so sharp that to even come close to them, you would be severely cut without even touching them. I saw fire coming up from under his feet that didn't even faze him. His arms outstretched, shaking many shiny necklaces then spewing vicious words against them, sometimes even screaming and cursing at the necklaces then laughing loudly. He threw his head backward, shrieking, and then dropped those beautiful necklaces into the fire. I crouched down in the tall grass. I didn't want anyone to see me. Who and what was this? Feeling scared, I decided to head back to Princess Yahaloma. I should have never left her. What was I thinking?

A broad examination of climate fantasy and science fiction, from The Lord of the Rings and the Narnia series to The Handmaid’s Tale and Game of Thrones. Fellow Inklings J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis may have belonged to different branches of Christianity, but they both made use of a faith-based environmentalist ethic to counter the mid-twentieth-century’s triple threats of fascism, utilitarianism, and industrial capitalism. In Fire and Snow, Marc DiPaolo explores how the apocalyptic fantasy tropes and Christian environmental ethics of the Middle-earth and Narnia sagas have been adapted by a variety of recent writers and filmmakers of “climate fiction,” a growing literary and cinematic genre that grapples with the real-world concerns of climate change, endless wars, and fascism, as well as the role religion plays in easing or escalating these apocalyptic-level crises. When I was writing this story, I gave myself the assignment to ask 50 people whether or not they believed that black butterflies were messengers of death. Out of those 50, 39 responded yes, and some affirmed having had personal experiences with black butterflies. Some would say that few minutes after having seen them, they had received news that a family member or somebody they knew had passed away. Others assured that it was the spirit of a family member that had come to visit them. Only 11 said that they did not believe and had never heard anything regarding that. Since ancient times, many cultures have had that belief that black butterflies are messengers of death. However there are also some countries where they believe they bring good luck. What do you believe? Are black butterflies messengers of death or not? Or are you one of the people who believe that when they see one it announces good fortune. Surely if a black butterfly has ever entered your home and shortly after you received news that close one had passed away, you probably believe it. But if more than once they've entered in your home, and nobody has ever passed away, then you probably don't believe in it. In this story strange things happened to two women who widowed, and they were convinced that black butterflies were behind everything that happened to them. One of them almost ends up killed by stones thrown by a whole town; the other after becoming a widow decided to mourn for her whole life until she died. In the end one of them survived being buried by a bunch of stones. The other one changed her mind and decided to take off her mourning dress, and both ended up getting married again. If you want to know what they went through how is it that in the end they changed their minds and got married again, I invite you to read this exciting story full of mystery, suspense and action and... why not, a bit of humor as well.
