"Disobedient Aesthetics examines emergent forms of creative civil disobedience that have arisen in response to digital tools of surveillance and control. Analyzing activities that defy-by hacking, subverting, or otherwise thwarting efforts to use the interface of our bodies and networked technologies-Disobedient Aesthetics theorizes the rhetorical and aesthetic character of such disobedient acts and the possibilities, limitations, and risks they pose for democratic participation. In recent decades, new tools of surveillance and control have become ubiquitous, among them security cameras, data mining in social media spaces, and biometric scanning. As such, we all now dwell in spaces of public, everyday life that entangle networked levers of control with the facticity of having bodies, DNA, or even faces in public. Each chapter probes a different aspect of our embodied experience as sites of data exploitation. The first chapter examines tactical interventions into the thermal vision systems used on military drones. Human body heat itself is transformed into a media object and a source of data for lethal drone systems. In the following chapter, we encounter extraordinarily sophisticated facial recognition platforms that are turning our very faces into actionable data mines. The next chapter examines two kinds of on-demand DNA analysis, at-home testing, like that used by 23andMe, and a related police practice, to show what's at stake when the hunger for personal data dives all the way into our genetic makeup. The next chapter considers how surveillance and control has come to change urban governance, and with it the physical space of publicness itself. Data-driven governance, paired with home "sharing" platforms like AirBNB apply even more pressure on populations, and have engendered new predictive forms of policing and new architectural forms, such as anti-homeless spikes in public spaces. The final chapter examines several different creative, critical, and collective efforts to democratize access to the technical knowledge needed to intervene in the control systems addressed in the prior chapters. A concluding epilogue revisits current theories and manifestations of "control," and offers an alternative reading of Gilles Deleuze's oft-cited thesis on control societies-namely, that with control, it is not a matter of escaping it, but a matter of "finding new weapons" to undermine its functions. All of the projects and activities surveyed here do indeed attempt that, but the epilogue meditates on an alternative to finding new "weapons," in the search for new "tactics." Ultimately, Disobedient Aesthetics theorizes control and the possibilities of creative, disobedient intervention into it, as at once an aesthetic and rhetorical phenomenon, with the creative disruptions of control surveyed here standing as potent models for productive paths for democratizing technology now"--

International law's rich existence in the world can be illuminated by its objects. International law is often developed, conveyed and authorized through its objects and/or their representation. From the symbolic (the regalia of the head of state and the symbols of sovereignty), to the mundane (a can of dolphin-safe tuna certified as complying with international trade standards), international legal authority can be found in the objects around us. Similarly, the practice of international law often relies on material objects or their image, both as evidence (satellite images, bones of the victims of mass atrocities) and to found authority (for instance, maps and charts). This volume considers these questions; firstly what might the study of international law through objects reveal? What might objects, rather than texts, tell us about sources, recognition of states, construction of territory, law of the sea, or international human rights law? Secondly, what might this scholarly undertaking reveal about the objects - as aims or projects - of international law? How do objects reveal, or perhaps mask, these aims, and what does this tell us about the reasons some (physical or material) objects are foregrounded, and others hidden or ignored. Thirdly what objects, icons and symbols preoccupy the profession and academy? The personal selection of these objects by leading and emerging scholars worldwide, will illuminate the contemporary and historical fascinations of international lawyers. As a result, the volume will be an important artefact (itself an object) in its own right, capturing the mood of international law in a given moment and providing opportunity for reflection on these preoccupations. By considering international law in the context of its material culture the authors offer a new theoretical perspective on the subject.

An edited collection that addresses the vital intersection of contemporary art and activism in this watershed cultural moment. Activism is a critical point of contention for institutions and genealogies of contemporary art around the world. Yet artists have consistently engaged in activist discourse, lending their skills to social movements, and regularly participating in civil and social rights campaigns while also boycotting cultural institutions and exerting significant pressure on them. This timely volume, edited by Tom Snow and Afonso Ramos, addresses an extraordinary moment in debates over the institutional frameworks and networks of art including large-scale direct actions, as well as a radical rethinking of art venues and urban spaces according to racial, class, or gender-based disparities, including demonstrations against the extractive and exploitative practices of neoliberal accumulation and climate catastrophe. From ACT UP and its affiliate groups since the dawn of the AIDS crisis to the counter-spectacle and street theatrics of the so-called Arab Spring and Occupy, to ongoing protest movements such as Black Lives Matter, Rhodes Must Fall, and Decolonize This Place, activist aesthetics has proven increasingly difficult to define under traditional classifications. Resurgent campaigns for decolonial reckoning, ecological justice, gender equality, indigenous rights and antiracist pedagogies indicate that the role of activism in contemporary art practice urges a critical reassessment. Does 'participatory' art and architecture shape social reality, or is it shaped by it? Shifting the ground of this debate, which tends to assume one or other direction of influence, this innovative book explores the inherently dialectic relationship between society and the built environment. At the same time, it strives for a historically conscious discussion of a very contemporary issue. Chapters rethink the top-down model of participation and audience activation of high modernism, from Alexander Dorner's immersive museum to Mies van der Rohe's 'room(s) for play'; investigate participation in spaces under political pressure, from exhibitions in bombed-out buildings in besieged Sarajevo (1992-5) to the art and organizing of revolution in Egypt (2012-13); draw historical parallels between modes of participation and the exercise of power that are seldom compared with one another, from sites of occupation in 1968 Mexico and 2011 Spain; finally creating links between cartography and feminism and between tourism and internet surveillance. With these juxtapositions of the aesthetic and the everyday, and the built and the mediated, new questions arise: is space formed once and for all, or is it the changeable product of changeable patterns of use? The results produce a variety of insights both around the theory and philosophy of curating digital works, and also around the practical and technical possibilities and challenges.
