Learned Ignorance Or Docta Ignorantia Illustrated written by Nicolas Cusa and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-09 with categories.

Cusa's mystical-religious philosophy was set forth in his essays De Docta Ignorantia (Of Learned Ignorance), which was published in 1440. This work consists of three books: the first deals with God (the Self Maximus considered absolutely), the second deals with the universe (Self maximum contracted in the Plurality of Things), and the third of Jesus Christ (Self up as contracted and all at once). The title -which is an oxymoron- has a deep significance. On the one hand it relates to Socrates' irony -"I only know that I know nothing"- in the belief that it is impossible for a student to deepen his knowledge in his search for truth. It is also a negative theology, the recognition that the Being of God cannot be reached by our understanding. Our current edition presents an illustrated version of the First Book

The Theology Of Wolfhart Pannenberg written by Carl E. Braaten and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-30 with Religion categories.

How deep has Pannenberg's influence been on American theology? Which particular ideas or themes from his work have been most pervasive to American thinkers, and which have encountered the greatest resistance? What implications does his work have beyond explicitly theological contexts--e.g., for philosophy, ethics, environmental concerns, political action, and the natural sciences? What new forms have his ideas taken as they have been adapted to fit the very different context of American theology? The authors of the twelve critiques in this volume represent a broad cross section of American thought on religion. The essays cover virtually all of the major areas in which Pannenberg has published. An introductory survey provides a comprehensive overview of the critical literature on Pannenberg from the early 1960s to 1986. Together, the essays represent an accurate barometer of the influence Pannenberg has had in America, as well as the sorts of reservations that the English-speaking world brings to his work. It has now been many years since Pannenberg's first visit to the United States. At that time the discussion with Pannenberg focused on the radically historical character of his proposal for theology, centering around revelation and resurrection. In the meantime, Pannenberg's thought has expanded almost encyclopedically into most of the major disciplines studied in a modern university. Without doubt the most comprehensive theologian at work today, his place in the history of twentieth-century theology is well assured.

While most works on Nicholas of Cusa concentrate either on his early career as author of the monumental 'Catholic Concordance' or on his later career as writer of remarkable philosophical/theological works such as 'On Learned Ignorance' and 'The Vision of God', the essays included here attempt to address the whole Cusanus, sharing common contexts, issues and themes. Following chapters on the legacy of conciliarism and ecumenicity, the story begins with the Council of Basel for which Cusanus wrote 'The Catholic Concordance', but from which he broke away, raising issues of private conscience as well as the balance between papal authority and representative councils in the pursuit of reform. The story then turns to the 'matrix' between Constantinople and a new council in Ferrara when Cusanus received a ship-board gift from the 'Father of Lights' and began to write his great philosophical/theological treatises. When taken together the essays in this book not only form a cohesive whole, they also enlighten aspects often left in the shade, such as the enigmatic aspects of Cusanus' participation in the council, and his mystical theology that reveals a man of faith in search of certainty beyond the well-trod paths of philosophical reflection.

Mathematical Theologies written by David Albertson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The writings of theologians Thierry of Chartres (d. 1157) and Nicholas of Cusa (d. 1464) represent a lost history of momentous encounters between Christianity and Pythagorean ideas before the Renaissance. Their robust Christian Neopythagoreanism reconceived the Trinity and the Incarnation within the framework of Greek number theory, challenging our contemporary assumptions about the relation of religion and modern science. David Albertson surveys the slow formation of theologies of the divine One from the Old Academy through ancient Neoplatonism into the Middle Ages. Against this backdrop, Thierry of Chartres's writings stand out as the first authentic retrieval of Neopythagoreanism within western Christianity. By reading Boethius and Augustine against the grain, Thierry reactivated a suppressed potential in ancient Christian traditions that harmonized the divine Word with notions of divine Number. Despite achieving fame during his lifetime, Thierry's ideas remained well outside the medieval mainstream. Three centuries later Nicholas of Cusa rediscovered anonymous fragments of Thierry and his medieval readers, and drew on them liberally in his early works. Yet tensions among this collection of sources forced Cusanus to reconcile their competing understandings of Word and Number. Over several decades Nicholas eventually learned how to articulate traditional Christian doctrines within a fully mathematized cosmology-anticipating the situation of modern Christian thought after the seventeenth century. Mathematical Theologies skillfully guides readers through the newest scholarship on Pythagoreanism, the school of Chartres, and Cusanus, while revising some of the categories that have separated those fields in the past.
