The combination of distinct materials is a key issue in modern industry, whereas the driving concept is to design parts with the right material in the right place. In this framework, a great deal of attention is directed towards dissimilar welding and joining technologies. In the automotive sector, for instance, the concept of “tailored blanks”, introduced in the last decade, has further highlighted the necessity to weld dissimilar materials. As far as the aeronautic field is concerned, most structures are built combining very different materials and alloys, in order to match lightweight and structural performance requirements. In this framework, the application of fusion welding techniques, namely, tungsten inert gas or laser welding, is quite challenging due to the difference in physical properties, in particular the melting point, between adjoining materials. On the other hand, solid-state welding methods, such as the friction stir welding as well as linear friction welding processes, have already proved to be capable of manufacturing sound Al-Cu, Al-Ti, Al-SS, and Al-Mg joints, to cite but a few. Recently, promising results have also been obtained using hybrid methods. Considering the novelty of the topic, many relevant issues are still open, and many research groups are continuously publishing valuable results. The aim of this book is to finalize the latest contributions on this topic.

The alloys 82 and 182 have been widely used as filler metal to join austenitic stainless steel with alloy 600 by a shielded metal arc welding process in the reactor pressure vessel and pressure vessel nozzles, which are both components in boiling water reactors. These components are affected by interdendritic/intergranular stress corrosion cracking, usually confined to the welding metal of alloys 82 and 182. For better understanding of this effect, the heat-affected zones (HAZ) were studied. Usually, the damages are present in dissimilar metal welds along the fusion lines; this zone is susceptible to cracking. This is an important reason to research the microstructural behavior in the transition regions. For this study, specimens for dissimilar welding SB166Alloy 82/182SA182 were prepared; the physical dimensions of the specimens were 2.0 by 1.0 by 0.375 in. (5.08 by 5.54 by 0.95 cm). The welding metals were prepared as multilayer by shielded metal arc welding process using electrodes ERNiCr3 and ENiCrFe3. The microstructural characterization was realized by optical and scanning electron microscopy, including electron backscattering diffraction technique. Additionally, the Vickers microhardness profile was recorded using a Shimadzu Model HMV-G-20DT. The measurements were from the base metal and HAZ as well as the welding. The microscopy analysis shows that austenite phase is present in both base metals. The chemical compositions of different materials indicate that they correspond to the joints of alloy 600 and stainless steel (SS) 304L with alloy 82 and 182. The values of microhardness are interesting results of these joining welding. They show a slight increase in the hardness value as the measurements approached the fusion line, with the exception of the SA182 alloy.

Welding of titanium alloys to the iron, nickel, or cobalt-based alloys resulted in brittle welds which fractured while in the weld fixture or upon the application of low stress after removal from the weld fixture. Various filler metals were used to weld titanium to nickel or cobalt-based alloys; the filler metal must be compatible with both the titanium and the dissimilar metal. (Author).

Dissimilar Metal Joining written by Dheerendra Kumar Dwivedi and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This volume discusses dissimilar metal joining by fusion and solid-state processes. It is a complex process due to differences in chemical compositions, physical properties, mechanical properties, and thermal properties of the parent metals to be joined. The contents focus on issues related to fusion and solid-state welding of dissimilar metals. The book is based on the fundamental and experimental investigation on methodologies used to overcome issues related to dissimilar metal joining by fusion welding (GTAW and its variant), resistance spot welding and solid state joining (friction stir welding, friction stir spot welding, and diffusion bonding) largely based on research investigation conducted at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee.
