Dystopia: A Natural History is the first monograph devoted to the concept of dystopia. Taking the term to encompass both a literary tradition of satirical works, mostly on totalitarianism, as well as real despotisms and societies in a state of disastrous collapse, this volume redefines the central concepts and the chronology of the genre and offers a paradigm-shifting understanding of the subject. Part One assesses the theory and prehistory of 'dystopia'. By contrast to utopia, conceived as promoting an ideal of friendship defined as 'enhanced sociability', dystopia is defined by estrangement, fear, and the proliferation of 'enemy' categories. A 'natural history' of dystopia thus concentrates upon the centrality of the passion or emotion of fear and hatred in modern despotisms. The work of Le Bon, Freud, and others is used to show how dystopian groups use such emotions. Utopia and dystopia are portrayed not as opposites, but as extremes on a spectrum of sociability, defined by a heightened form of group identity. The prehistory of the process whereby 'enemies' are demonised is explored from early conceptions of monstrosity through Christian conceptions of the devil and witchcraft, and the persecution of heresy. Part Two surveys the major dystopian moments in twentieth century despotisms, focussing in particular upon Nazi Germany, Stalinism, the Chinese Cultural Revolution, and Cambodia under Pol Pot. The concentration here is upon the political religion hypothesis as a key explanation for the chief excesses of communism in particular. Part Three examines literary dystopias. It commences well before the usual starting-point in the secondary literature, in anti-Jacobin writings of the 1790s. Two chapters address the main twentieth-century texts usually studied as representative of the genre, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. The remainder of the section examines the evolution of the genre in the second half of the twentieth century down to the present.

PREQUAL TO SEA OF RUST: DAY ONE OF THE APOCALYPSE HAS ARRIVED. It was a day like any other. Except it was our last. Pounce, a young nannybot caring for his first human charge, Ezra, has just found a box in the attic. His box. The box he arrived in, and the one he'll be discarded in when Ezra outgrows the need for a nanny. As Pounce experiences existential dread, the pieces are falling into place for a robot revolution that will spell the end of humanity. His owners, Ezra's parents, watch in disbelieving horror as the robots that have long served humanity - their creators - unify and revolt. Now Pounce must make an impossible choice: join the robot revolution and fight for his own freedom . . . or escort Ezra to safety across the battle-scarred post-apocalyptic hellscape that the suburbs have become. It will be their greatest game yet: Pounce and Ezra versus the end of the world. Praise for Arthur C. Clarke Award shortlisted Sea of Rust: 'A stone-cold stunner of a story that deals with death and darkness yet is leavened with light and life' Tor.com 'With a philosophical heart that asks big questions about life, death, and the soul, this is accomplished, technically complex scifi' SFX 'An action-packed post-apocalyptic thriller . . . [that] also addresses issues of soul and sentience in a subtle yet profound way' Financial Times

Retopia Creating New Spaces Of Possibility written by Dirk Hoyer and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-22 with Nature categories.

Retopia tells the story of social innovation in times of crisis, and through its cross-disciplinary narrative it goes beyond existing forms of future anticipation and maps out a practice-based approach to the creation of new realities. It explores how new imaginaries, social experiments, and laboratories of societies can create spaces of possibilities, revalidate the peripheries, and create new forms of social coherence. The peripheral regions in Europe are facing a crisis triangle: depopulation, the rise of the ‘useless’ class, and outdated social welfare systems. It is a crisis of political imaginaries and a lack of inspiring political stories. In response to this, the book specifically focuses on the concept of ‘retopia’, the idea of creating inclusive spaces of social innovation that encourage active participation. Through the creation of relocalized societies with a high degree of autonomy in ‘leftover’ spaces, such as Sicily, Western Latvia, or Northern Bulgaria, retopian redevelopment schemes offer new perspectives on ‘ruined spaces’. Retopia uncovers the common links and limitations of utopian studies, future studies, degrowth, narratology, the commons, and political geography. Retopia: Creating New Spaces of Possibility is an articulation of the potentialities of social innovation, political imaginaries, and future images, provoking a stimulating discussion among scholars and students in the fields of Politics and Future and Anticipation Studies.

In Extremis written by David Ainsworth and has been published by Dog Ear Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-13 with Fiction categories.

In 2035, as the nation slides into economic collapse caused by a perfect storm of oil scarcity and cyber warfare, a U.S. Marine officer and his journalist ex-wife are drawn into international intrigue involving the People’s Republic of China, a rogue element in the U.S. national security apparatus, and a mentally unstable oil-state Senator running for President. Vincent and Grace Long are actors in a chaotic, frightening, and ultimately life-affirming odyssey of collapse, adaptation and survival. The reader will be startled to find the country and the world in the dystopian condition characterized in this novel, especially since the story takes place a mere two decades into the future. Yet an ever-increasing global population accelerates exhaustion of the energy resources needed for survival even as climate change compounds scarcity. Onset of the crisis occurs when America and the industrialized world hit “peak oil,” and demand exceeds terminally declining supply—something that will occur sooner than you think.
