In poor economies - such as those found in Asia, Africa, and Latin America - migration is adopted as a family survival strategy in which rural residents join the migration stream, leaving their families and villages behind. In India, the state of Bihar is a case in point where poverty-driven, 'male only' migration without family is a predominant feature. Studying the left behind families of migrants in rural areas of Bihar, this book analyzes the pattern, motivation, and impact of migration in a holistic manner, keeping the 'left behind' women at its center. The book explores the linkage between poverty, migration, and development by probing various facets like: Who migrates and what makes them migrate? What is the spatial manifestation of development on migration patterns? What is the role of remittances in bringing about economic well-being, social well-being, and physical well-being of the left behind families? Notions such as this have, in their own way and over time, given the women in the Santal Parganas the resolve to wrest what is rightfully theirs. This is a powerful book in the way in which it unfolds the lives and anxieties of Santal women in two villages of Dumka district, Jharkhand. From the very inception, adivasi women come alive through separate life histories. They span different situations and social patterns but all of them relate to rights in landed property, and their own troubled identities in the backdrop of harsh living conditions, social discrimination and lack of state support. Land for the Santal women is not a mere economic resource. It stands for security, social position and identity, and in this men have a distinct advantage. Soon after, writing in a personal vein, the author unfolds how these anxieties of the Santal women resonate her own. The author traces the relationship between Santals and their land from historic times to the modern era when they have access to both the modern legal system and their own customary laws. As modern influences crowd out traditional mores the author asserts that development is not always a benign process of social advancement but a highly political struggle for re-negotiating power relations between men and women, and among social groups. The use of a 'community' identity as adivasis has also been responsible for denying women rights to land in the context of the movement for political autonomy of Jharkhand. Based on rich ethnographic material, this sensitive book lays bare the reality of being an adivasi and an adivasi woman, in all its nuances, in the modern globalized world.

This volume brings into focus a range of emergent issues related to women in the Indian diaspora. The conditions propelling women’s migration and their experiences during the process of migration and settlement have always been different and very specific to them. Standing ‘in-between’ the two worlds of origin and adoption, women tend to experience dialectic tensions between freedom and subjugation, but they often use this space to assert independence, and to redefine their roles and perceptions of self. Background: Migrants from countries in the Northern Triangle made up 92% of attempted crossings on the United States Southern international border in 2021; Guatemala is the top sending country in that region. Scholarship in Guatemala has focused on escape from violence and economic opportunity as reasons for migration; however, drivers of migration are more complex, including "aspirations" of transnational families and influences of social networks. Furthermore, few studies have addressed the mental health distress caused by being "left-behind" to migration in Guatemala. Social network characteristics may moderate some mental health impacts of migration, but this has not been investigated using socio-centric network data from Central American migrant-sending communities. Methods: This dissertation includes three studies undertaken in partnership with participants using CBPR. Study 1 leverages data from focus groups and Photovoice interviews to investigate perceived changes from migration impacting community health. Qualitative results informed the research questions in studies 2 and 3. Studies 2 and 3 use data from a census of a representative community in the region. Study 2 evaluates the demographics, social network characteristics, and network dynamics influencing migration decisions. In study 3, we evaluate the relationship between migration and depressive symptoms, and the social network characteristics that may moderate that relationship. Results: Migration impacts rural communities in Guatemala in several ways, including mental health distress among those left-behind (Study 1). Twenty-two percent of the population had plans to migrate. Having a child emigrate reduced the odds of migration (OR 0.08). A spouse remaining was predictive of migration (OR 2.38) (Study 2). Having emigrant ties in the US increased the odds of depression (OR 1.11), as did a higher out-degree. Higher transitivity scores, especially for women, moderated the relationship between migrant ties and depression (Study 3). Conclusions: Migration changes social structures in rural Guatemalan communities, resulting in feelings of sadness and loss. Social network characteristics influence migration decisions among transnational families. Migration from the region is not slowing, so understanding the mental health impacts in migrant-sending communities is imperative. Social network characteristics should be explored in further research as potential assets to ease mental health burdens among those left-behind.
