Emperor Taizong (r. 626–49) of the Tang is remembered as an exemplary ruler. This study addresses that aura of virtuous sovereignty and Taizong’s construction of a reputation for moral rulership through his own literary writings—with particular attention to his poetry. The author highlights the relationship between historiography and the literary and rhetorical strategies of sovereignty, contending that, for Taizong, and for the concept of sovereignty in general, politics is inextricable from cultural production. The work focuses on Taizong’s literary writings that speak directly to the relationship between cultural form and sovereign power, as well as on the question of how the Tang negotiated dynastic identity through literary stylistics. The author maintains that Taizong’s writings may have been self-serving at times, representing strategic attempts to control his self-image in the eyes of his court and empire, but that they also become the ideal image to which his self was normatively bound. This is the paradox at the heart of imperial authorship: Taizong was simultaneously the author of his representation and was authored by his representation; he was both subject and object of his writings.

An argument that social, political, and economic systems maintain power by discarding certain people, places, and things. Discard studies is an emerging field that looks at waste and wasting broadly construed. Rather than focusing on waste and trash as the primary objects of study, discard studies looks at wider systems of waste and wasting to explore how some materials, practices, regions, and people are valued or devalued, becoming dominant or disposable. In this book, Max Liboiron and Josh Lepawsky argue that social, political, and economic systems maintain power by discarding certain people, places, and things. They show how the theories and methods of discard studies can be applied in a variety of cases, many of which do not involve waste, trash, or pollution. Liboiron and Lepawsky consider the partiality of knowledge and offer a theory of scale, exploring the myth that most waste is municipal solid waste produced by consumers; discuss peripheries, centers, and power, using content moderation as an example of how dominant systems find ways to discard; and use theories of difference to show that universalism, stereotypes, and inclusion all have politics of discard and even purification—as exemplified in “inclusive” efforts to broaden the Black Lives Matter movement. Finally, they develop a theory of change by considering “wasting well,” outlining techniques, methods, and propositions for a justice-oriented discard studies that keeps power in view.

Der große österreichische Nationalökonom Joseph Alois Schumpeter gehört zweifel los weltweit zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern dieser Wissenschaft. Vor allem wurde mit der Prägung des Schumpeterschen Unternehmerbegriffes ein Aspekt in die sozial-und wirtschafts wissenschaftliche Diskussion eingeführt, der gerade heute wieder zuneh mend Anhänger findet. Dabei wird allerdings manchmal übersehen, daß der Charakter des gesellschaft lichen Produktionsprozesses in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten einem tiefgreifenden Wandel unterworfen war. Angesichts der Komplexität des unternehmerischen Umfel des ist es auch dem Schumpeterschen Einzelkämpfer oftmals nicht mehr möglich, jenen Prozeß der innovatorischen Erneuerung in Gang zu halten, der einzig und allein eine rechtzeitige und kontinuierliche Anpassung an sich verändernde Wettbewerbs bedingungen gewährleistet. Erfolgreiche Innovationen beruhen auf der systematischen und koordinierten Suche nach Chancen, die sich aus den wirtschaftlichen, technologischen und gesell schaftlichen Veränderungen ergeben. Aufgabe der öffentlichen Hand ist es dabei, jene Rahmenbedingungen zu setzen, die es den Unternehmungen ermöglichen, die vorhan denen Leistungspotentiale bestmöglich zu entfalten. Die Schumpetersche Renaissance und das Vordringen neokonservativer wirt schaftstheoretischer Ström ungen hat in den vergangenen Jahren dazu geführt, daß der Staat seine Rolle einer eingehenden Prüfung unterziehen mußte. Auch in Österreich wurden althergebrachte Denkmuster überprüft und Handlungsmuster an neue Gege benheiten angepaßt. Im Zuge einer grundlegenden Neuorientierung haben ideolo gisch motivierte Sichtweisen pragmatischen und zukunftsorientierten Überlegungen Platz gemacht. Die Forderung, der Staat hätte sich aus sämtlichen Bereichen der Wirtschaft zu rückzuziehen, ist jedoch aus dem Gedankengebäude Schumpeters nicht ableitbar.
