The military alliance between the United States and Brazil played a critical role in the outcome of World War II, and yet it is largely overlooked in historiography of the war. In this definitive account, Frank McCann investigates Brazilian-American military relations from the 1930s through the years after the alliance ended in 1977. The two countries emerge as imbalanced giants with often divergent objectives and expectations. They nevertheless managed to form the Brazilian Expeditionary Force and a fighter squadron that fought in Italy under American command, making Brazil the only Latin American country to commit troops to the war. With the establishment of the US Air Force base in Natal, Northeast Brazil become a vital staging area for air traffic supplying Allied forces in the Middle East and Asian theaters. Herbert Daniel was a significant and complex figure in Brazilian leftist revolutionary politics and social activism from the mid-1960s until his death in 1992. As a medical student, he joined a revolutionary guerrilla organization but was forced to conceal his sexual identity from his comrades, a situation Daniel described as internal exile. After a government crackdown, he spent much of the 1970s in Europe, where his political self-education continued. He returned to Brazil in 1981, becoming engaged in electoral politics and social activism to champion gay rights, feminism, and environmental justice, achieving global recognition for fighting discrimination against those with HIV/AIDS. In Exile within Exiles, James N. Green paints a full and dynamic portrait of Daniel's deep commitment to leftist politics, using Daniel's personal and political experiences to investigate the opposition to Brazil's military dictatorship, the left's construction of a revolutionary masculinity, and the challenge that the transition to democracy posed to radical movements. In this history of right-wing politics in Brazil during the Cold War, Benjamin Cowan puts the spotlight on the Cold Warriors themselves. Drawing on little-tapped archival records, he shows that by midcentury, conservatives--individuals and organizations, civilian as well as military--were firmly situated in a transnational network of right-wing cultural activists. They subsequently joined the powerful hardline constituency supporting Brazil's brutal military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985. There, they lent their weight to a dictatorship that, Cowan argues, operationalized a moral panic that conflated communist subversion with manifestations of modernity, coalescing around the crucial nodes of gender and sexuality, particularly in relation to youth, women, and the mass media. The confluence of an empowered right and a security establishment suffused with rightist moralism created strongholds of anticommunism that spanned government agencies, spurred repression, and generated attempts to control and even change quotidian behavior. Tracking how limits to Cold War authoritarianism finally emerged, Cowan concludes that the record of autocracy and repression in Brazil is part of a larger story of reaction against perceived threats to traditional views of family, gender, moral standards, and sexuality--a story that continues in today's culture wars.

Houve muito alvoroço na mídia com a divulgação de um memorando secreto da CIA que registra o fato de o ditador Ernesto Geisel não só ter conhecimento, mas autorizar a execução sumária de opositores do regime Muitos comentários mostraram assombro com a forma fria e crua com que se planejava os assassinatos. Quem se assombrou não deve se lembrar que, em 2014, o resultado de dois anos e meio de trabalho da Comissão Nacional da Verdade foi apresentado num relatório de 3.338 páginas. Nele está a apuração destas ações e de muitas outras, que mostram as atrocidades cometidas pelo regime militar. Tudo disponível em https: //cnv.memoriasreveladas.gov.br/ Geisel frequentava a Igreja Evangélica de Confissão Luterana. O fato de um evangélico ter ocupado o Palácio do Planalto foi celebrado por lideranças das várias igrejas. Exemplo é a publicação do jornal oficial da Igreja Presbiteriana, o Brasil Presbiteriano, de março-abril de 1974, que reproduziu parte de um boletim da Igreja Presbiteriana Nacional de Brasília: "Um homem probo, honesto, operoso e capaz, deixa o poder e assume o seu lugar outro homem público, com folha de serviço relevante e personalidade definida e, sobretudo isso, um crente evangélico. [...] Nossas orações a Deus para que seu governo seja uma benção para todos os brasileiros de todas as crenças. Adeus Presidente Médici - Benvindo Irmão Geisel". Um crente evangélico que construiu uma imagem de conciliador, mas que, antes de morrer em 1996, declarou aprovar a tortura em depoimento ao Centro de Pesquisa e Documentação da Fundação Getúlio Vargas. E agora, em memorando contundente, revela-se mandante de assassinatos. O Volume II do relatório da comissão nacional da verdade deixa claro como católicos e evangélicos apoiaram o regime militar, por silêncio e omissão ou por ações explícitas. Além de Geisel, outros evangélicos ocuparam cargos de destaque, entre eles os governadores presbiterianos Geremias Fontes, no Rio de Janeiro, e Eraldo Gueiros Leite, em Pernambuco. E o jurista presbiteriano Nehemias Gueiros, redator do Ato Institucional número 2, de 1965. Evangélicos figuraram entre os colaboradores de órgãos de repressão, militares torturadores e agentes civis (sete, conforme o relatório da Comissão da Verdade). E foram inúmeros os líderes apoiadores, como doutrinadores políticos em suas congregações religiosas e/ou como delatores de "subversivos", vários "irmãos da igreja". A repressão interna nas igrejas evangélicas, em apoio ideológico ao regime, foi muito violenta, com perseguição a pastores e líderes leigos, fechamento de seminários teológicos e intervenções em instituições educacionais confessionais. Portanto, nesta obra, o ́leitor está convidado a mergulha a fundo, em fatos históricos que comprovam, literalmente; a participação de denominações protestantes históricas; na repressão, tortura, assassinatos e perseguição a fiéis evangélicos / protestantes que eram contrários; a DITADURA MILITAR.
