Bab 1 meninjau secara umum sejarah penelitian linguistik Nusantara dengan fokus pada bahasa Melayu sebagai bahasa yang paling awal diteliti dan, dalam konteks buku ini, sebagai fondasi ilmu linguistik bandingan historis dan Austronesia. Dalam Bab 2, secara ringkas tiga metode penelitian linguistik perbandingan dikemukakan. Kadang-kadang ada kekeliruan tentang status dan kesahihan tiga prosedur ini, tetapi pada hakikatnya hanya ilmu linguistik bandingan historis yang terbukti untuk pengkajian prasejarah dan klasifikasi bahasa yang sekerabat. Selanjutnya, bagian inti dalam buku ini, yaitu diskusi tentang prosedur perbandingan di tiga wilayah di Nusantara. Setiap bab ini menyoroti sejarah pengkajian linguistik perbandingan masing-masing di Sulawesi Selatan, Maluku Tengah, dan Kalimantan Barat. Tiga wilayah ini dipilih sebagai contoh perkembangan penerapan linguistik bandingan historis di Nusantara. Buku ini diakhiri dengan topik migrasi komunitas bahasa yang sekerabat serta kaitannya dengan distribusi dan pengelompokan bahasa di Nusantara.

Language documentation, also often called documentary linguistics, is a relatively new subfield in linguistics which has emerged in part as a response to the pressing need for collecting, describing, and archiving material on the increasing number of endangered languages. The present book details the most recent developments in this rapidly developing field with papers written by linguists primarily based in academic institutions in North America, although many conduct their fieldwork elsewhere. The articles in this volume — position papers and case studies — focus on some of the most critical issues in the field. This book presents a technical review of ecological and life history information on a range of Bornean wildlife species, aimed at identifying what makes these species sensitive to timber harvesting practices and associated impacts. It addresses three audiences: 1) those involved in assessing and regulating timber harvesting activities in Southeast Asia, 2) those involved in trying to achieve conservation goals in the region, and 3) those undertaking research to improve multipurpose forest management. This book shows that forest management can be improved in many simple ways to allow timber extraction and wildlife conservation to be more compatible than under current practices. The recommendations can also be valuable to the many governmental and non-governmental organisations promoting sustainable forest management and eco-labelling. Finally, it identifies a number of shortcomings and gaps in knowledge, which the hope can interest the scientific community and promote further research. This review is, an important scientific step toward understanding and improving sustainable forestry practices for long-term biodiversity conservation. Even in the short term, however, significant improvements can be made to improve both conservation and the efficiency of forest management, and there is no need to delay action due to a perceived lack of information. In the longer term it is expected that the recommendations from this review will be implemented, and that further research will continue to help foster an acceptable balance among the choices needed to maintain healthy wildlife populations and biodiversity in a productive forest estate.

Indonesia democratised after the long and authoritarian New Order regime ended in May 1998. But the transition was far less peaceful than is often thought. It claimed about 10,000 lives in communal (ethnic and religious) violence, and nearly as many as that again in separatist violence in Aceh and East Timor. Taking a comprehensive look at the communal violence that arose after the New Order regime, this book will be of interest to students of Southeast Asian studies, social movements, political violence and ethnicity.
