Il Sole non è un’idea né il semplice oggetto di una credenza, ma una realtà dai molteplici aspetti, soprattutto nei suoi effetti. Nei suoi raggi luminosi vi è la fonte di ogni azione fisica e chimica e di tutti i fenomeni cosmici e spirituali: la luce vitalizza e scompiglia, dà la vita e provoca la morte. Il Sole, “fuoco intelligente”, nel mondo grecoromano viene considerato un principio cosmico, un’idea. Per Platone, ad esempio, è l’immagine del Bene, quale si manifesta nella sfera delle cose visibili, per gli Orfici è l’intelligenza del mondo. Ed è, inoltre, fondamentale nel processo alchemico. L’essenza dell’alchimia consiste, infatti, nell’attrarre e condensare dai raggi solari, tramite un corpo materiale accuratamente preparato, che funge da magnete, un fluido proteiforme, conosciuto dai più come Spirito Universale, e nel corporificarlo, cioè nel renderlo visibile e afferrabile. Questo, una volta catturato, viene definito mercurio filosofico; sottoposto a una cottura graduale, conduce alla Pietra filosofale, la quale apre le porte di un insieme di sconosciute scienze che convergono tutte verso l’Assoluto.
