Aradia Gospel Of The Witches written by Charles Godfrey Leland and has been published by Jazzybee Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with categories.

This book is annotated with a rare biographical sketch of the author, written by Elizabeth Robins Pennell. Indefatigable in research, Mr. Leland collects from the mouths of Italian peasants all the information still surviving concerning witches and their rites. Much of this he incorporated in his previous writings, and much more—some of it, we are glad to think, on the point of appearance—has yet to see the light. It is difficult to over-estimate the interest of these survivals in Italy of pagan faith and rite, and it is eminently desirable that so much of them as possible should be preserved. They are on the verge of disappearance, and what is not now reclaimed will inevitably perish. On this point Mr. Leland insists. There are still, however, some few people in the Northern Ramagna who know the Etruscan names of the twelve gods. Invocations to Bacchus, Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, and the Lares may yet be heard, and there are women in the cities who mutter over the amulets they prepare spells known to the old Roman, and have lore which may be found in Cato or Theocritus. Aradia (Herodias), it may be said, is, according to the Vangelo of the witches, the daughter of Diana by her brother Lucifer, the god of the sun and of the moon, who for his pride was driven from Paradise. Aradia — not, Mr. Leland thinks, the Herodias of the New Testament, but an earlier replica of Lilith—is the chief patron of witches and the teacher of witchcraft. Deeply interesting is all that is said concerning her, and the book, which translates the poetic invocations, is a treasure-house to the student of witchcraft and myth. Contents: PREFACE CHAPTER I - How Diana Gave Birth to Aradia (Herodias) CHAPTER II - The Sabbat: Treguenda or Witch-Meeting--How to Consecrate the Supper CHAPTER III - How Diana Made the Stars and the Rain CHAPTER IV - The Charm of the Stones Consecrated to Diana CHAPTER V - The Conjuration of the Lemon and Pins CHAPTER VI - A Spell To Win Love CHAPTER VII - To Find or Buy Anything, or to Have Good Fortune Thereby CHAPTER VIII - To Have a Good Vintage and Very Good Wine by the Aid of Diana CHAPTER IX - Tana and Endamone, or Diana and Endymion CHAPTER X - Madonna Diana CHAPTER XI - The House of the Wind CHAPTER XII - Tana, The Moon-Goddess CHAPTER XIII - Diana and the Children CHAPTER XIV - The Goblin Messengers of Diana and Mercury CHAPTER XV - Laverna Comments on the Foregoing Texts The Children of Diana, or How the Fairies Were Born Diana, Queen of the Serpents, Giver of the Gift of Languages Diana as Giving Beauty and Restoring Strength Note

Martin Delrio probably never persecuted or met a witchcraft suspect, yet his name is a byword for credulity and cruelty. Jan Machielsen recovers the lost world of Delrio's scholarship set in the context of the Catholic-Reformation, rather than the straitjacket of demonology.

Christian Exercises in Eastern Form Truly a one-of-a-kind, how-to-do-it book, this small volume responds to a very real hunger for self-awareness and holistic living. It consists of a series of spiritual exercises for entering the contemplative state -- blending psychology, spiritual therapy, and practices from both Eastern and Western traditions. Anthony de Mello offers here an unparalleled approach to inner peace that brings the whole person to prayer -- body and soul, heart and mind, memory and imagination. In forty-seven exercises that teach things such as awareness of physical sensations, stillness, healing of hurtful memories, and consciousness of self and world, de Mello succeeds in helping all who have ever experienced prayer as difficult, dull, or frustrating. The essential key, he notes, is to journey beyond mere thought-forms and discover satisfying new depths in prayer from the heart. This allows for a greater sense of awareness amid silence, and disposes the one who prays to untold riches, spiritual fulfillment, and ultimately, a mystical experience of God-centeredness. Drawing on Scripture, as well as insights from Eastern and Western spiritual masters, the author has a unique appeal that transcends time, culture, and religious background. For many years a bestseller in the English language, Sadhana has now been translated into more than two dozen foreign languages. Readers the world over have eagerly received this sincere spiritual leader, who has led many toward the wealth of insight and spirit that dwells within them.

The High Medieval Dream Vision written by Kathryn Lynch and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988-06-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

In the High Middle Ages, the dream narrative was an enormously popular and influential form. Along with the romance, it was perhaps the genre of the age. It has come down to us in such classics twelfth to fourteenth-century classics as The Divine Comedy, the Romance of the Rose, Piers Plowman, Chaucer's early poetry, and the works of Guillaume de Machaut. This book redefines the dream vision by attending to its role in philosophical debate of the time, a conservative role in defense of the high medieval synthesis of reason and revelation. Lynch shows how the epistemological basis of this synthesis and the theories of visions that emerged from it drew on Arabic commentaries of Aristotle. These theories informed poetic visions modeled on Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy, a work she discusses in detail before turning to Alain de Lille, Jean de Meun, and Dante. A final section, on John Gower's Confessio Amantis shows how fourteenth and fifteenth-century writers extended and finally moved beyond the conventional form of the dream vision.

The Philosophy Of Giambattista Vico written by Benedetto Croce and has been published by anboco this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-27 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

My reasons for believing that a new exposition of Vico's philosophy is required may easily be inferred from the observations on the effects of his work and the biographical notes which form respectively the second and fourth appendices to this volume. Here I merely wish to state that my exposition is not meant for a summary of Vico's writings work by work and part by part. It rather presupposes an acquaintance with these writings, and, where that is lacking, is intended to induce the reader to procure them in order to follow better and to check the interpretation and estimate of them here offered. On this supposition, though I have made free use of my author's actual words, especially in the chapters dealing with history, I have not thought it desirable to mark them as quotations except where it was important to emphasise the precise phrase of the original. I have in general combined such passages from fragments scattered over a wide field, sometimes abbreviating, sometimes amplifying, and always freely adding words and phrases of my own by way of commentary: and the continual use of quotation marks would merely have shown up in a manner more wearisome than valuable the reverse side of my embroidery, which any reader who so desires can study by the help of the references given at the end of the book. In my anxiety to show in every detail of my work, so[Pg viii] far as I could, the veneration due to the great name of Vico, I have endeavoured to be brief with the brevity at which he himself aimed as the hall-mark of sterling scientific thought. With this in view I have refrained even from controversy with his various interpreters, and have either contented myself with mere remarks, or more often left my details to be justified by the coherence of my view as a whole.
