La disciplina che si occupa della traduzione, un tempo denominata teoria della traduzione o, sulla scorta del francese, traduttologia, in tutto il mondo è considerata una scienza. Dato che il linguaggio della mente non è verbale (anche se può ospitare parole o frasi), il continuo passaggio da testi verbali letti o scritti a ragionamenti (discorso interno) sulla codifica e sulla decodifica determina un continuo code-shifting tra linguaggi discreti e continui.
