Consumer safety has become a central issue of the food supply system in most countries. It encompasses a large number of interacting scientific and technological rnatters, such as agricultural practice, microbiology, chemistry, food technology, processing, handling and packaging. The techniques used in understanding and controlling contaminants and toxicity range from the most sophisticated scientific laboratory methods, through industrial engineering science to simple logical rules implemented in the kitchen. The problems of food safety, however, spread far beyond those directly occupied in food production. Public interest and concern has become acute in recent years, alerting a wide spectrum of specialists in research, education and public affairs. This series aims to present timeIy volumes covering all aspects of the subject. They will be up-to-date, specialist reviews written by acknowledged experts in their fieIds of research to express each author's own viewpoint. Osteosarcopenia Bone Muscle And Fat Interactions written by Gustavo Duque and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-06 with Science categories.

This edited work presents the most current evidence on osteosarcopenia from bench to bedside, which is expected to facilitate the understanding of this syndrome and to develop preventive and therapeutic strategies. With our aging population, chronic diseases such as osteoporosis and sarcopenia are becoming highly prevalent. Fortunately, our understanding of the bone and muscle interactions has increased in recent years. This has allowed to the coining of the term osteosarcopenia to describe a syndrome in which these two diseases overlap. This overlap between osteoporosis and sarcopenia has major negative effects not only on our older adults but also on health systems worldwide. Readers will find a highly translational approach that starts with a summary of recent discoveries on stem cells biology, muscle and bone interactions – including the role of local bone and muscle fat – followed by comprehensive reviews on myokines (i.e. myostatin), osteokines (i.e. osteocalcin) and adipokines (i.e. interleukins) as major players and determinants of bone and muscle loss with aging. In addition, the role of sex steroids (i.e. estrogens, androgens), and calciotropic hormones (i.e. parathyroid hormone, vitamin D) in the pathogenesis of this syndrome is also reviewed. Moreover, using practical diagnostic and therapeutic tips, this book summarizes the clinical characteristics of osteosarcopenic patients thus facilitating the diagnosis and treatment of this syndrome in clinical practice. Finally, the book presents the case for the Falls and Fractures Clinic as the optimal model of care for this syndrome, aimed to avoid fragmentation and optimize osteosarcopenia care, and simultaneously prevent falls and fractures in older persons. This book offers relevant information on the mechanisms of osteosarcopenia, and a practical guide on how to identify and treat this geriatric syndrome and its adverse outcomes, which are dramatically affecting our aging population. The work is written by leaders in the field and is especially suited not only to any researcher in the musculoskeletal arena but also to medical specialists and allied health professionals involved in the care of older persons.

A History Of Ancient Philosophy Iv written by Giovanni Reale and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-12-21 with Philosophy categories.

This book covers the first 500 years of the common era. These years witnessed the revivals of Aristotelianism, Epicureanism, Pyrrhonism, Cynicism, and Pythagoreanism; but by far the most important movement was the revival of Platonism under Plotinus. Here, the historical context of Plotinus is provided including the currents of thought that preceded him and opened the path for him. The presuppositions of the Enneads are made explicit and the thought of Plotinus is reconstructed. The author reorients the expositions of Middle Platonism and neo-Pythagoreanism. He provides a full exposition of Hermeticism and the doctrines of the Chaldean Oracles. He also defends the notion that Philo of Alexandria nourished a Jewish philosophy, not an eclectic mixture.

Portal hypertension is a relatively common condition, the complications of which are frequently life threatening. Patients with portal hypertension represent an important por tion of the daily clinical work of abdominal radiologists, gastroenterologists and abdominal surgeons. During the past two decades the development of new radiological devices and of new percutaneous image-guided treatment methods has resulted in fundamental changes in the clinical management of patients with portal hypertension. During the same period tremen dous progress was achieved in the visualization of the numerous morphological and func tional changes observed in patients with portal hypertension, due to the clinical introduc tion of the new cross-sectional imaging methods: ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. I am very grateful to Prof. Plinio Rossi, an internationally recognized leader in the field of interventional radiology, for accepting the challenging task of compiling and presenting in a structured way the numerous facts and data that have become available during the past few years in this rapidly developing field. The editor has been inspired and successful in his selection of the impressive group of international experts that has contributed to many chapters of this volume.

Christ And The Bible Third Edition written by John Wenham and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-08-01 with Religion categories.

Defense of the Bible begins with rational proofs for the historicity and accuracy of its documents. Christ and the Bible places the argument for the authority of scripture squarely on Jesus. With uncluttered logic and straightforward prose Wenham marshals Gospel evidence to show Jesus' own view of Scripture-that it is (1) historically accurate, (2) authoritative, (3) the standard for ethics, and (4) the verbally inspired revelation of God. He then considers why we should listen to Jesus when he makes such claims and why "Christ's view should be the Christian view." The study substantiates Jesus' reliability influence on all New Testament writers. Finally, Wenham considers two related problems: first, which writings really belong in the Bible; second, the reliability of the text as now available. The presentation is easy to read and understand. This third edition updates and dialogs with recent developments.
