The first column presents the results of an OLS 29Regression discontinuity estimators exploit discontinuities in the treatment assignment mechanism that may develop because of rules governing access as in this study (or as in Angrist and Lavy, 1999 study of the effects of class size on test scores) or geographic boundaries (as in Bl [...] In the second column of Table 3, we allow for the possibility that school quality variables may be measured with error (as defined in Equation 9), which is uncorrelated with the regressors in Equation 8. The signs and magnitude of the estimated coefficients are similar to those in the first column: Peer effects are concave and the variance in peer performance is negatively and significantly relate [...] If that school is removed from the analysis the results correspond to our priors with the ordering of the effect of each type of teachers consistent with the definition. [...] The average of the estimated peer effect coefficients, while large in scale due to the limited variation in the peer variables within a school, are exactly the same in terms of signs and statistical significance as those in OLS and random effects.

This paper estimates peer effects on student achievement using a panel data set from a middle school in China. Unique features of the organization of Chinese middle schools (Grades 7 to 9) and panel data allow us to overcome difficulties that have hindered the separation of peer effects from omitted individual factors due to self-selection and from common teacher effects and to identify peer effects at the classroom level. We estimate peer effects for Math, English, Chinese, and overall test scores separately. In a linear-in-means model controlling for both individual and teacher-by-test fixed effects, peers are found to have a positive and significant effect on math and overall test scores and a positive but insignificant effect on Chinese test scores, but no effect on English test scores. Importantly, students at the middle of the ability distribution tend to benefit from better peers, whereas students at the ends of the ability distribution do not suggesting that policy makers who want to exploit positive peer effects face difficult tradeoffs in classroom and school assignment.

We examine peer effects in early education by estimating value added models with school fixed effects that control extensively for individual, family, peer, and teacher characteristics to account for the endogeneity of peer group formation. We find statistically significant and robust spillover effects from preschool on math and reading outcomes, but statistically insignificant effects on various behavioral and social outcomes. Of the behavioral and social effects explored, we find that peer externalizing problems, which most likely capture classroom disturbance, hinder cognitive outcomes. Our estimates imply that ignoring spillover effects significantly understates the social returns to preschool.
