Ambas desconstruíram percepções romantizadas acerca da loucura e seu tratamento nas instituições manicomiais, alegorias do desamparo a que estavam sujeitados toda sorte de inadaptados sociais que compunham a população do Brasil, nos idos da implementação e consolidação do regime republicano. Quando escolheu o espaço do hospício para dar vida aos enredos, não quis projetar, como muito se cogitou, a particularidade de suas experiências. Muito mais do que uma dor singular, sentia a dor coletiva de seus pares. As denúncias localizadas nos escombros do Hospital dos Alienados não são só suas, mas de todos. Entre o que viveu e o que escreveu – Do vivido ao escrito, Afonso Henriques de Lima Barreto pretendeu alinhavar seu pensamento ao mundo. Mas não fez isso transformando, simplesmente, os fatos de sua vida em episódios ficcionais. Foi muito além disso. Utilizou-se da dinâmica da linguagem para representar suas facetas literárias, vincadas, todas, pelo desejo do exercício de humanidade, que, para ele, deveria sobrepor quaisquer outros interesses. Assim, o testemunho de Lima Barreto sobre a loucura é o passaporte literário para que o interlocutor adentre as portas do hospício de outrora, fazendo um exercício de fruição. Não há denominador comum, só o subjetivo inerente a cada ser humano. A arte é um convite, inclusive à reflexão.
