El pensamiento social de Ángel Herrerra se fraguó muy pronto; y desde muy joven se mantuvo fiel a una postura constante en su trayectoria, sin apenas cambios pese a las variadas situaciones sociopolíticas que le tocó vivir y a las realidades enfrentadas que debió experimentar. Ordenado sacerdote tras la guerra civil, y más tarde nombrado obispo de Málaga en 1947, mantuvo como básicos y pragmáticos principios, defendidos siempre con una increíble seguridad, los cuatro siguientes: fidelidad perenne a la Doctrina social de la Iglesia; consideración del bien común como el más esencial para la construcción y desarrollo de la sociedad; la preocupación por formar 'minorías selectas' de donde pudiera salir el 'gobierno de los mejores'; y fidelidad y apoyo al poder constituido. En esta obra e analiza, sobre todo, la aplicabilidad o la concreción de estos principios en una acción social estricta: la del Instituto Social León XIII, desde el que posteriormente fue gestando y dando a luz la Escuela de Ciudadanía Cristiana, la Escuela de Periodismo de la Iglesia, los esbozos de un Instituto Social Obrero, y hasta su última dedicación a la Editorial Católica. Incomprensiblemente, y hasta cierto punto explicable, encontró más apoyo en el poder político que en la propia Jerarquía eclesiástica para la realización y difusión de sus ideas y obras. Aparte cierto recelo, silencio o muy débil apoyo, para los obispos coetáneos Ángel Herrera, desde 1965 cardenal de la Iglesia, ejerció un episcopado que muy bien podría señalarse, al mismo tiempo, como tradicional y atípico.

Desde el punto de vista de las organizaciones, la conciliación viene estimulada por la necesidad de atender las demandas sociales formuladas por uno de los stakeholders internos clave: sus empleados. La negociación que busca la confluencia de las demandas de los trabajadores con la estrategia de la empresa se ha manifestado con diferentes niveles de insistencia desde los orígenes de las sociedades mercantiles modernas. En las últimas décadas del siglo pasado, las pautas de bienestar familiar han ido mutando fruto de la fractura del modelo familiar habitual e irrupción y posterior progresión de las mujeres en el mercado laboral, por la demanda de su independencia económica o de su aspiración a complementar los ingresos del hogar. Así, la conciliación ha venido impulsada principalmente por la legislación tanto nacional como comunitaria y por las organizaciones empresariales y sindicales para que la conciliación se introdujera en la negociación de los convenios. Desde las compañías se asiste también a un mayor interés por estas cuestiones, no solo por la necesidad del cumplimiento de la legislación vigente, sino sobre todo por el convencimiento in crescendo de que puede ser rentable invertir en medidas de equilibrio trabajo-familia por las mejoras intangibles que pueden contribuir a mejorar los resultados y la reputación empresarial. En este sentido, esta tesis doctoral ha pretendido contribuir al incremento del conocimiento a nivel académico tanto teórico como empírico, así como a nivel práctico para empresas y responsables de recursos humanos en esta materia.
