Este libro propone la existencia de un cine documental que busca la emancipación mediante la desarticulación de la narración histórica predominante. El documental del disenso plantea un cambio de paradigma a través de un giro subjetivo y conceptual, creando espacios de resistencia en las grietas que subyacen entre los relatos del poder y la oposición. Este cine se desenvuelve en los márgenes del establecimiento y se inventa a sí mismo apoderandose de los acuerdos consensuados, para luego transmutarlos en argumentos de disuasión. Este trabajo se enmarca en la intrincada espiral de violencia que ha caracterizado la historia de Colombia, donde las principales voces que se han enfrenado en la construcción de los consensos de reflexión y memoria han sido siempre la de los medios de comunicación, encargados de difundir y respaldar las versiones acordadas por el poder, y la de las narrativas de la oposición, entre las que encontramos documentales canónicos que visibilizan las historias de los más afectados por la violencia. En ese sentido, a través del análisis de tres películas colombianas, se revela un posible tercer camino: provocar el desorden como una forma de proponer un nuevo orden. De eso trata este libro.

Featuring primary sources from figures of the period, Van Young discusses the political instability of the period—internal warfare, military uprisings, intermittent dictatorships, sharp conflicts among political groupings—and attributes them to a belief by political actors in the fundamental lack of legitimacy in central government institutions after the sweeping away of the Bourbon imperial structure and its replacement first with a very short-lived Mexican empire followed by a series of increasingly authoritarian aspirational republican constitutions.

En 1681 Carlos II autorizó la impresión de la recopilación de las Leyes de Indias. Constaban de 9 libros en 4 tomos que compilaron las fuentes del derecho de indias por materias, con arreglo a un criterio cronológico. Una compilación como ésta generó problemas porque envejeció con rapidez; en 1714 el Consejo de Indias advirtió a Felipe V que, por el volumen de la obra legislativa, se debían añadir dos libros más, y que existía confusión sobre la prelación de fuentes y sobre el derecho vigente. El 9 de mayo de 1776, Carlos III ordenó la formación de un Nuevo Código de Indias que se conoce como la Segunda Carolina. La Corona designó una Junta de Ministros- Consejeros que, entre 1776 y 1820, tuvo 4 secretarios. Sobre sus métodos de trabajo, procedimiento de toma de decisiones y sobre las biografías y semblanzas de los 4 secretarios trata la magna obra de José María Vallejo García Hevia, en tres tomos y con un extenso apéndice documental, con un total de más de 2.000 páginas. El trabajo expone cómo en 1792 Carlos IV promulgó el Libro I, pero no permitió publicarlo. Este Libro trataba de cuestiones eclesiásticas desde una perspectiva de defensa de las regalías de la corona, y el autor entiende que la no publicación obedeció a un deseo de no provocar el enfrentamiento con la iglesia. En 1799 la Junta cesó en sus funciones, y las retomó entre 1815-1820 cuando ya se había iniciado el proceso emancipador.

"Few decisions in life should be more personal than the choice of a spouse or lover. Yet, throughout history, this intimate experience has been subjected to painstaking social and religious regulation in the form of legislation and restraining social mores." With that statement, Asunción Lavrin begins her introduction to this collection of original essays, the first in English to explore sexuality and marriage in colonial Latin America. The nine contributors, including historians and anthropologists, examine various aspects of the male-female relationship and the mechanisms for controlling it developed by church and state after the European conquest of Mexico and Central and South America. Seldom has so much light been shed on the sexual behavior of the men and women who lived there from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. These chapters examine the variety of sexual expression in different periods and among persons of different social and economic status, the relations of the sexes as proscribed by church and state and the various forms of resistance to their constraints, the couple's own view of the bond that united them and of their social obligations in producing a family, and the dissolution of that bond. Topics infrequently explored in Latin American history but discussed her include premarital relations, illegitimacy, consensual unions, sexual witchcraft, spouse abuse, and divorce. Lavrin's opening survey of the forms of sexual relationships most discussed in ecclesiastical sources serves as a point of departure for the chapters that follow. The contributors are Serge Grunzinski, Ann Twinam, Kathy Waldron, Ruth Behar, Susan Socolow, Richard Boyer, Thomas Calvo, and María Beatriz Nizza da Silva. Asunción Lavrin is a professor of history at Arizona State University at Tempe. Her 1995 book, Women, Feminism, and Social Change in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay, 1890-1940, won the Arthur P. Whitaker Prize from the Middle Atlantic Council on Latin American Studies.

This book traverses the cultural landscape of Colombia through in-depth analyses of displacement, local and global cultures, human rights abuses, and literary and media production. Through an exploration of the cultural processes that perpetuate the "darker side" of Latin America for global consumption, it investigates the "condition" that has led writers, filmmakers, and artists to embrace (purposefully or not) the incessant violence in Colombian society as the object of their own creative endeavors. In this examination of mass-marketed cultural products such as narco-stories, captivity memoirs, gritty travel narratives, and films, Herrero-Olaizola seeks to offer a hemispheric approach to the role played by Colombia in cultural production across the continent where the illicit drug trade has made significant inroads. To this end, he identifies the "Colombian condition" within the parameters of the global economy while concentrating on the commodification of Latin America’s violence for cultural consumption.
