From 1935 to 1992, the Frobenius Institute focused on studies in southern Ethiopia. The results of its empirical research are not only of ethnographic, but also historical value since the work was conducted before the Christian proselytization of the local population and the ascendance of the socialist DERG regime. The anthropologists of the Frobenius Institute were among the few researchers to have documented South Ethiopia's cultural diversity before this change. This publication provides a critical look at the resulting ethnographic studies and renders an overview of Ethiopian studies and the political situation in Ethiopia during those sixty years.

The ethnography of the Wolayta people of southern Ethiopia by Eike Haberland goes back to his research in Wolayta in the years 1954/55, 1967, and 1970/71. Following his research, Haberland wrote the present work, which he did not publish. It is a classic ethnography divided into the following chapters: Sacred kingship, myths of state, court culture and administration, law and justice, the meritorious complex, feasts and rituals, crops, economy and folkloric material. The ethnography is illustrated by historical photographs from the archives of the Frobenius Institute.

At a time when policies are increasingly against it, international migration has become the subject of great public and academic attention. This book departs from the dominant approach of studying international migration at macro level, and from the perspective of destination countries. The contributors here seek to do more than 'scratch the surface' of the migration process, by foregrounding the voices and views of Ethiopian youth-potential migrants and returnees-and of their sending communities. The volume focuses on the perspective and agency of these young people, both potential migrants and returnees, to better understand migration decision-making, experiences and outcomes. It brings together rarely documented cases of young men and women from several communities across Ethiopia, migrating to the Gulf and South Africa. Explaining the agency of local actors-prospective migrants, brokers and sending families-Youth on the Move illuminates the pervasive, persistent failure of state attempts to regulate migration. Moreover, it examines the financing of migration and the sharing of remittances, within a culturally situated moral economy. While accounts centered on economics and political violence are important, the contributors demonstrate compellingly that these factors alone cannot provide a full understanding of migration's complexity, nor of its social realities.

The book examines the missionary-evangelists' side of establishing non-Orthodox ecclesial communities in three major ethnic groups in southern Ethiopia between 1927-1944. The Kale Heywat Church, an association of almost 3600 congregations is the strongest confirmation of the movement's success.
