Al mediar el siglo XIX, la fotografía mexicana era una actividad que no gozaba del espacio social que toda forma cultural necesita para desenvolverse: emancipada apenas de la primera impresión que produjo--semejante, en más de un sentido, a la que causó el cinematógrafo medio siglo más tarde--pero aún lastrada por obstáculos técnicos que impedían el registro instantáneo y la reproducción masiva, no era fácil augurarle un futuro promisorio. Vino la guerra, sin embargo, y la gran historia desbrozó el campo a la fotografía. En el punto culminante del conflicto interno que sacudió a México entre 1854 y 1867, la propaganda recurrió, por primera vez, a la "objetividad" fotográfica para legitimar su discurso. La imagen del archiduque Fernando Maximiliano de Habsburgo no fue nunca, en consecuencia, simplemente una imagen. A la hora del establecimiento del imperio, en 1864, sirvío para convencer, para deslumbrar; para sacralizar. Y en la hor de su fracaso, en el Cerro de las Campanas, denunció y documentó el crimen del liberalismo regicida. Entre estado dos momentos--a causa de estos dos instantes--, la fotografía hecha en nuestro país sufrió una honda transformación, de la que da cuenta La fotografía durante el imperio de Maximiliano. Su uso para "documentar" la prostitución, la prosapia de la corte imperial o la identidad de los personajes más connotados en México y en Europa queda de manifesto en esta investigación novedosa, uno de cuyos soportes principales es un trabajo hemerográfico escrupuloso y prolijo.
