This study examines the effect of border fencing of the world’s most dangerous border on Durand line and conducts a pre and post analysis of reduction in terrorism in Pakistan and Afghanistan post the global war on terrorism. The research is based on analysing the decrease in terrorist attacks due to border management of cross-border terrorist infiltration post border fencing. The research aims to understand does fencing borders reduce terrorism and is fencing an effective measure to combat terrorism by analysing the case study of the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. To assess the impact of border fencing on the Pak-Afghan border on decrease in terrorist incidents in Pakistan, this study adopted the Simple Linear Regression Model and Poisson Regression Model. The null hypothesis stated that border fencing did not reduce terrorism whereas the alternative hypothesis claimed that border fencing did reduce terrorism in the post border fencing time period from 2015-2018. The study reveals significant relationship between border fencing and reduction in terrorism incidents. The regression results suggest that reduction in the terrorism is statistically significant and border fencing did cause a substantial reduction in terrorist attacks and concludes that border fencing is an effective mean of combating terrorism as in the case of Pak-Afghan border.

The events of 11 September 2001 were a watershed moment in American history; one that has catapulted national security back to the center stage. In response to the growing fears of terrorism and the heightened concern for illegal immigration that subsequently followed, President Bush signed the Secure Fence Act in October 2006, thus entangling two very distinct issues: counterterrorism, and illegal immigration. The legislation authorized the construction of 700 hundred miles of double-layered fencing in addition to cameras, ground radar and improved lighting along the U.S.-Mexican border. The proposed border fence was designed to prevent "unlawful entry into the United States, including entries by terrorists, other unlawful aliens and instruments of terrorism." This thesis examined the probable effectiveness of the border fence on illegal immigration and counterterrorism, by analyzing other such structures in the context of these two very different phenomena. This study investigated the border fence in San Diego, California and its affect on illegal immigration in addition to the security fence along Israel's border with Gaza to explore its effect on terrorism. The result of this study suggests that fences can prove effective in curbing illegal immigration and less successful with regard to combating terrorism.

Borders traditionally served to insulate nations from other states and to provide bulwarks against intrusion by foreign armies. In the age of terrorism, borders are more frequently perceived as protection against threats from determined individuals arriving from elsewhere. After a deadly terrorist attack, leaders immediately encounter pressure to close their borders. As Nazli Avdan observes, cracking down on border crossings and policing migration enhance security. However, the imperatives of globalization demand that borders remain open to legal travel and economic exchange. While stricter border policies may be symbolically valuable and pragmatically safer, according to Avdan, they are economically costly, restricting trade between neighbors and damaging commercial ties. In Visas and Walls, Avdan argues that the balance between economics and security is contingent on how close to home threats, whether actual or potential, originate. When terrorist events affect the residents of a country or take place within its borders, economic ties matter less. When terrorist violence strikes elsewhere and does not involve its citizens, the unaffected state's investment in globalization carries the day. Avdan examines the visa waiver programs and visa control policies of several countries in place in 2010, including Turkey's migration policies; analyzes the visa issuance practices of the European Union from 2003 until 2015; and explores how terrorism and trade affected states' propensities to build border walls in the post-World War II era. Her findings challenge the claim that border crackdowns are a reflexive response to terrorist violence and qualify globalists' assertions that economic globalization makes for open borders. Visas and Walls encourages policymakers and leaders to consider more broadly the effects of economic interdependence on policies governing borders and their permeability.

The construction of a US-Mexico border fence has proved an increasingly divisive method for securing the southern US border since its initial construction as the San Diego Fence in 1990. Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 the construction of a US-Mexico border fence has morphed from a method to stem the tide of illegal immigration from Mexico into a legislated method to prevent the entrance of terrorists. All terrorists except two have gained entrance into the US through manipulation of the US immigration system. Those two exceptions crossed the US-Canada border. This thesis analyzes what threat Mexico poses as a transit for terrorists attempting to enter the US by surreptitious means, and what deterrent or defeat effect a US-Mexico fence provides. The absence of a terrorist attempt to gain entrance into the US via Mexico indicates that Mexico does not provide the essential support required for an Al Qaeda terrorist, and that other countries and other means of entrance provide a more viable option and likelihood for success. The one support element that could provide a terrorist entrance from Mexico is that of the "coyote". A strategy of vigorous enforcement against illegal immigration without combating the motives for illegal immigration has helped to enable the "coyote" to gain the capability to transport a terrorist into the US from Mexico. The US-Mexico border fence has a limited deterrent effect against terrorists as demonstrated by the migration of illegal immigrants to more remote crossing sites. Finally, this thesis provides recommendations to better secure US land borders.

Border control continues to be a highly contested and politically charged subject around the world. Open Borders counters the knee-jerk reaction to build walls and close borders by arguing that there is not a moral, legal, philosophical, or economic case for limiting the movement of human beings at borders.
