Shih Tzu: Introduction to the Breed Origins and History Origins: The Shih Tzu is an ancient breed of toy dog that originated in China. Their name "Shih Tzu" means "lion" in Chinese, which reflects their regal and lion-like appearance. They are also known as the "Chrysanthemum Dog" due to the way their facial hair grows in a circular pattern, resembling the flower. History: The Shih Tzu has a long and illustrious history that dates back over a thousand years. They were highly treasured by Chinese royalty, including emperors and nobles, who kept them as companions and lap dogs. These dogs were selectively bred for their small size, luxurious coat, and charming personalities. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Chinese imperial courtiers presented Shih Tzus as gifts to foreign dignitaries, including Tibetan monks. It is believed that the Shih Tzu played a role in the development of the Tibetan breeds, such as the Lhasa Apso and Tibetan Spaniel. In the early 20th century, the Shih Tzu nearly faced extinction due to political turmoil in China. However, a few surviving individuals were brought to England, and the breed was revitalized through careful breeding programs. They gained recognition by various kennel clubs and became popular among dog enthusiasts worldwide. Today, the Shih Tzu is a beloved companion dog known for its friendly nature, affectionate personality, and stunning appearance. They are a popular choice for families, seniors, and individuals living in apartments due to their small size and adaptability. The breed's rich history and royal origins continue to add to its charm and allure.

Excerpt from Dogs of China Japan, in Nature and Art China and Japan, their people and their customs, have lured the foreigner in his thousands to the making of many books. No writer, however, has thought fit to devote much study to their canine race, though in the Far Fast, just as in Europe, the dog has been for ages man's chief help and protector: The rich man's guardian and the poor man's friend, The only creature faithful to the end. Those who have, in passing, deigned to notice the existence of dogs in the Far East have paused only for brief comment, usually by way of grasping another stick to beat the Celestial for gastronomic eccentricity or superstitious delusions, and have given to the Eastern canine races scarcely the proverbial "dog's chance" of being considered better than universally mongrel. It is not claimed for the following pages, whose original design included only the smaller races of Eastern dogs, that they enumerate all the existing breeds, or that they deal conclusively with any one of them. China alone is a vast country in which geographical difficulties render comprehensive study difficult. It is hoped, nevertheless, that there has been laid a foundation upon which further investigation may be firmly based, and that the researches made may assist in the identification of new species as well as the preservation of certain breeds which, like the St. Bernard in Europe, now run the risk of following the Irish wolfhound and the hard-worked turnspit dog of our great-grandfathers, to extinction. Oriental Networks explores forms of interconnectedness between Western and Eastern hemispheres during the long eighteenth century, a period of improving transportation technology, expansion of intercultural contacts, and the emergence of a global economy. In eight case studies and a substantial introduction, the volume examines relationships between individuals and institutions, precursors to modern networks that engaged in forms of intercultural exchange. Addressing the exchange of cultural commodities (plants, animals, and artifacts), cultural practices and ideas, the roles of ambassadors and interlopers, and the literary and artistic representation of networks, networkers, and networking, contributors discuss the effects on people previously separated by vast geographical and cultural distance. Rather than idealizing networks as inherently superior to other forms of organization, Oriental Networks also considers Enlightenment expressions of resistance to networking that inform modern skepticism toward the concept of the global network and its politics. In doing so the volume contributes to the increasingly global understanding of culture and communication. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

The Chinese Shar-Pei is an ancient breed of dog that originates from China. The breed is known for its distinctive wrinkled skin and strangely colored blue-black tongue. Due to the breed originating in China, the breed's name is believed to be derived from the English spelling of the Cantonese equivalent 'sā pèih, ' which translates to 'Sand Skin.' The name 'Sand Skin' is a clear reference to the breeds short, rough coat and wrinkled features. The Shar-Pei has dramatically more wrinkles during its puppyhood as it 'grows' into its excess skin. Despite their ancient history, the Shar-Pei was named one of the world's rarest breeds by 'Time' magazine and the 'Guinness Book of World Records' in the late 1970s. The breed's prickly skin was originally developed to help defend the dog against wild boar, as the Shar-Pei was originally used for hunting purposes. The breed was then used in dog fighting which is where its large amount of excess skin developed. The Shar-Pei's excess skin made it hard for other dogs to grab onto, and if they did manage to grab ahold on the Shar-Pei it still had room to maneuver inside its own skin! Shar-Pei's were known to completely twist around in their own skin to bite assailants back! In modern times the Shar-Pei has mainly been used as a guard dog and a companion dog. As a whole the breed makes very good family pets providing that they are properly socialized with children, strangers and other animals to combat their innate protective, territorial and potentially aggressive nature. However if the breed is properly socialized they are known to be incredibly loyal, fairly affectionate and occasionally playful.
