Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Sociology - Law and Delinquency, grade: A, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, course: Introduction to Policing, language: English, abstract: Technology has made incredible strides in the 21st century and has aided in the prevention, apprehension, and conviction of many offenders. However, these expensive resources require specially trained personnel to operate in an already, often understaffed, police force (Griffiths, 2008, p. 98). Although, policing techniques have adapted to the ever changing nature of crime, offenders have adopted new ways of concealing their misconduct. How should law enforcement agencies respond to this? Do laws need to be stricter? Do police need more funding? Currently, the answer is not in the future, but in the past. Man and beast once fought in a constant struggle for dominance. Once an enemy, now a companion, the trained dog has proven to be an effective resource for police departments (Mesloh, 2000). This paper will briefly explore the beneficial traits of police dogs and determine if expanding their use will aid in effective policing. First, what types of skills do police dogs have? What training can they undertake? Second, how can their use benefit police departments and society? Third, what are the costs associated with training and maintenance? How can dogs save money?

It is essential that those in the criminal justice system understand the tasks that police dogs perform and the evidence that their work produces. Police and Military Dogs: Criminal Detection, Forensic Evidence, and Judicial Admissibility examines the use of police and military dogs for a wide variety of functions and explores canine biology and behavior as it applies to police work. The book begins with an overview of the changes that have occurred in the field in the past four decades as discoveries have been made about canine capabilities. The author examines how a canine handler’s work with a skilled police dog can affect the subsequent investigation and prosecution of the crime. He discusses optimal procedures for finding and processing evidence and describes the boundaries of admissibility of evidence produced by police dogs. The book examines the many diverse detection functions police dogs are being trained to perform, ranging from cadaver detection to the discovery of explosives. It also describes the use of dogs to apprehend criminals and in search and rescue operations. Written for a wide audience including canine handlers, forensic scientists, attorneys, and the judiciary, this volume covers topics pertinent to all aspects of the police dog in contemporary law enforcement.

In 1953, there were zero canine programs on any American police force. In 1989, there were more than 2,000 programs with over 7,000 police handler dog teams. In 1953, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had the nation's only program with 20 teams but in 1989 there were 46 programs with 300 teams. These are dramatic program expansions. There have been controversial issues of using dogs; the pros and cons of using dogs for specialized functions are thoroughly analyzed in this book. Clearly identified are the elements to be assessed as a prelude to implementing a canine patrol unit, with the essential features critical to a unit's organization, operation, and ultimate success.

Unleashed written by Simon Harding and has been published by Policy Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-01 with Social Science categories.

Drawing on evidence from both sides of the Atlantic, Simon Harding explores the culture of the status dog in Unleashed. In housing projects in the United States and United Kingdom, certain dog breeds convey status—authority, respect, power, and control—on their owners, while urban street gangs have developed the dangerous practice of training dogs to be weapons. Combining perspectives from sociology, criminology, and public policy, Harding contextualizes these related phenomena and considers the complex mix of factors motivating them, including urban deprivation, social control of public space, and the influence of media imagery.
