A entrada e o estabelecimento de imigrantes no Brasil desde 1808, data da abertura dos portos ao comércio com as nações amigas, foi um dos grandes acontecimentos da História do país. Somente entre 1901 e 2000, a população brasileira saltou de 17,4 milhões para 169,6 milhões de pessoas, com 10% desse crescimento devendo-se aos imigrantes. Esse intenso fluxo migratório foi acompanhado de um ainda maior fluxo de informações sobre esses novos residentes. Durante todo o período analisado nesta obra de dois volumes – de 1808 a 2015 –, a imprensa ocupou-se do assunto a partir de referências conceituais, como assimilação, nacionalismo, embranquecimento, eugenia, racismo, xenofobia, tolerância e hospitalidade. A partir da consulta de 11 mil edições de periódicos jornalísticos impressos presentes no país ou em português e sobre o Brasil em que o tema da imigração foi citado direta ou indiretamente, selecionamos aproximadamente 200 matérias jornalísticas que compõem este estudo. O objetivo, tomando como referência os estudos migratórios, é abordar as seguintes questões: o que significa ser imigrante ou estrangeiro para a imprensa brasileira ao longo da nossa História? Qual foi o papel atribuído a esses indivíduos e grupos, no Brasil, pelos meios de comunicação impressos? Neste primeiro volume, do início do século XIX até o final da Primeira República, faço uma breve introdução sociológica do Brasil oitocentista, bem como uma apresentação do debate teórico que nos guiou ao longo de todo o estudo, abordando conceitos como "raça", "etnia", "povo", "identidade nacional" e "cultura". O período de 1808 a 1870 é marcado por experimentações na área de políticas imigratórias e a intensificação, sobretudo a partir de 1850, do debate acerca da necessidade de "braços para a lavoura". É a partir da década de 1870 que o "ensaio" imigrante ganha força; desse momento até o final do regime monárquico, surgem muitas das colônias que se tornariam cidades profundamente influenciadas pelos seus primeiros colonos. Da chegada dos republicanos ao poder (1889) até o início do governo Vargas (1930), é vitoriosa a tese de que o futuro do Brasil depende do braço europeu na lavoura. Procuram-se agricultores brancos que, de uma vez só, trarão a prosperidade econômica e o "melhoramento racial". O objetivo maior desta obra é contribuir, dentro das limitações deste autor, com os estudos migratórios no Brasil, de modo a repensarmos nossa identidade e nossa solidariedade com os estrangeiros que aqui buscam uma nova vida.

Humanised accounts of restrictions on mobility are rarely the focus of debates on irregular migration. Very little is heard from refugees themselves about why they migrate, their experiences whilst entering the EU or how they navigate reception conditions upon arrival, particularly from a gendered perspective. The Securitization of Migration and Refugee Women fills this gap and explores the journey made by refugee women who have travelled from Somalia to the EU to seek asylum. This book reveals the humanised impact of the securitization of migration, the dominant policy response to irregular migration pursued by governments across the Globe. The Southern EU Member State of Malta finds itself on the frontline of policing and securing Europe’s southern external borders against transnational migrants and preventing migrants’ on-migration to other Member States within the EU. The securitization of migration has been responsible for restricting access to asylum, diluting rights and entitlements to refugee protection, and punishing those who arrive in the EU without valid passports –a visibly racialised and gendered population. The stories of the refugee women interviewed for this research detail the ways in which refugee protection is being eroded, selectively applied and in some cases specifically designed to exclude. In contrast to the majority of migration literature, which has largely focused on the male experience, this book focuses on the experiences of refugee women and aims to contribute to the volume of work dedicated to analysing borders from the perspective of those who cross them. This research strengthens existing criminological literature and has the potential to offer insights to policy makers around the world.
