¿Qué sentido tiene plantearse el tema del domicilio urbano desde la perspectiva del departamento? La creciente expansión de las ciudades, acompañada por la aparición de vastos suburbios de baja densidad, es una de las características del desarrollo urbano actual. Pero este crecimiento no sólo se explica por las fluctuaciones demográficas o la migración campo-ciudad: una buena parte de los ciudadanos contemporáneos demanda mayor espacio para vivir y al mismo tiempo proclama la casa aislada rodeada por jardines como un ideal. Sin embargo, en la mayoría de los casosesta aspiración trae aparejados lejanía, sitios reducidos y dificultades de servicios públicos.. Los intentos por revertir esta situación, a través de subsidios de renovación urbana y normativas que favorecen la construcción de edificios de viviendas, han resultado en el aumento de una oferta inmobiliaria estandarizada y hasta cierto punto indiferente a la compleja realidad de la ciudad. Este libro intenta valorizar la condición urbana y las múltiples situaciones que un departamento puede ofrecer a sus habitantes, tanto desde su dimensión individual e interior (distribución de recintos, mobiliario, estrategias de integración de baños y cocinas) como desde su perspectiva colectiva y de conjunto (escala urbana, fachadas, espacios comunes, inserción en la ciudad).
